M40i squared setup question, cant find a definite answer.

I'm sure this have been answered somewhere, but just want to make super sure before ordering the tires.

Can I order 4x 245/45 R20 winter tires instead of staggered ones?

Will 245/45 fit on the back rims that have 275/40 OEMs?

I would have thought that you will need two new wheels for the rear. Same size as the front.

Rik the car will come with summer tires, I want to buy a square winter set, same size as the front for all four wheels (245/45 r20). The rear rims are wider (9.5in) so I'm not sure if the front tire size will fit or not.

They will fit but because of the stretch they will be shorter in diameter potentially causing issues with the AWD system.

Look what is BMW approved cold weather winter set: 20" Double Spoke 699M, Orbit Grey P/N 36110003064
Pirelli® Scorpion Winter 245/45R20 103V XL

It is a square setup.
I do not think there will be any issues with AWD system.

Only thing I'm worried about is this set being same width rims front and back, while summer rims are 9.5 in the back.

Staggered set is just $75 more so pretty much negligible, might go for it after all just for peace of mind.

That's just for the fronts…

You would need 36112472751 on the rears, i.e. 275/40 R20 106V XL

No, the recommended range for 20 x 9.5 inch wheels is such that 245's are too narrow and you will have to stretch them to fit. They will probably go on, but will have noticeable stretch to the sidewalls, the handling and grip will be compromised. Just spend the $75.

The above tire has a rim width range of 7.5" - 9.0"

If you are getting new rims and tires then you have a choice of going square.

The setup in the picture puts 20x8" wheels on all four corners in a squared setup.

OP has a staggered setup with:
--Front: 20x8" ET27 with 245/45-20
--Rear : 20x9.5" ET43 with 275/40-20

Agree with others, not advised due to the fact the tire will be stretched. Some shops may decline to mount the 245/45-20 on the rears because many tire manufacturers specify 9" as the maximum wheel width for this size.

I'm not sure what this has to do with the OPs question. It looks nice but is off topic. OP is looking to purchase TIRES ONLY to have. Tire shop swap the tires on the original staggered rims. It's not advised as it's too much stretch on the rear. Yes. He/she could do what you did and spend $5k more for a full set of bmw wheels with tires but they are looking to only spend day $1k on tires and have them mounted. Going with the same size tires allows for moving them around each new season for rotating and prolonged life.

Even if the OP could fit same size tires on staggered rims, there would still be the issue of not rotating front to rear. You wouldn't want the wider rims on the front, with the narrow rims on the rear.

Simply put, the rear rims are too wide for what the OP would like to do.

🤦not when you dismount the tires in the spring to put the summer tires back on. In the fall you would just select different tires for different corners when mounting.

Do BMW users still do that sort of thing? I suppose it is an option. Not something I'd be doing, high risk of damaging rims and/or tires.

OP really needs a couple of extra 'front' sized rims, to go square, even if changing tires seasonally. Two could stay mounted, just swap the other two.

I see it as different market requirements. UK are not your typical serious snow drivers. Tire is also more a European winter choice.

You can usually get both square and staggered setups here in Europe on either the 695 or 699 rim directly from BMW. But at the moment the square setups are out of stock.

Mounting a 245 tire on the 9,5 rim is no option to considder.

But related to the initial question of this thread if the goal is to keep the budget low I would get some decent aftermarket rims and have a set of wintertires instead of swapping tires on one set of rims.

Or if you want to stay with OEM rims instead of paying a fortune for two spare 699 8x20 rims I would recommend to have a 19" set for the winter. Thats what I did and quite happy with it. Also the 19" are not so easyly damaged in potholes or curbs hidden in the snow

Thanks for all the replies.

I found a good deal on Bridgestone Blizzak LM005 in 275/40 20 size, so I just went with OEM sizes:

2x 245/45 for the front and 2x 275/40 for the rear, all made in 2021.

Turned out to be like $25 more over 4x 245/45.
