Get it from the dealer. but if your local store has it, get 10W60 Castrol.

For the U.S. members:

I just ordered 8 quarts of Castrol TWS 10w60 oil from Tischer BMW, www.getbmwparts.com for $9.75/quart. That is an excellent price!

I purchased 1 quart from my local BMW dealership last week for almost $23.00! Also, they wouldn't fill the car with oil for free as some have mentioned. I got into a huge argument with the service manager about this.

The oil is not easily found so no Walmart shopping for it.

I am pretty sure only specialized car shops and the dealer will have it.

RickC where in the world did you go!!! $23 a Quart... ridiculous!! I picked up some from Center BMW for $11 and change. Their service manager also said that anytime I was low I could stop by and they would top off for me Gratis. I can't believe that there would be that big of a price difference between Metro LA and the Valley.

I can't find the oil on Tischer's website. I tried a part # search and no luck. Under BMW, the M isn't even a search option.

Santa Monica BMW = FAIL

They do not top you off for gratis. Like I said earlier, I got into into a huge argument with the service manager about this. He had the fucking audacity to tell me I could afford to pay for my own oil if I could afford an M3, I am not exaggerating. I told him that I expect a certain level of service that comes with an M purchase and that his dealership is the only one that I know of that denies oil to M owners. The argument escalated from there and he ended up giving me the oil for free that day and said I'm an angry person. I told him to fuck off. Oh, and months ago they charged me $250 for an oil change. Even though the location is convenient for me, I will never go back there!!

Yes, but some people might want to do it themselves or when they are travelling. Also, the M3 burns oil so sometimes it's good to have some stored in your home just in case.

Hard to know why some act that way. While it is a legitimate point of view that oil may be considered a consumable, if oil changes, brake pads & rotors are covered, replenishing oil is a minor deal. Not worth alienating customers over.

Yes. Get the BMW oil bag to hold a liter and keep it in the trunk along with a funnel, gloves and some handi-wipes.

No. Only BMW dealers carry it. I've heard Porsche dealers this type of oil for cheaper than BMW dealers, but I've never checked it out.

I don't see the point of carrying it if you check your oil every week or so. You should be able to keep it topped off at home. It's not going to go down suddenly unless you punch a hole in your pan or oil radiator.

Ok. But I like having a quart or liter with me just in case. I generally check my oil when I fill up at the gas station. If I need it then it is real handy to have some with you.

Although, with no dipstick (thanks, BMW) you need to do it when the engine is running, and it takes quite a while to get a reading,

Methinks the decision to do away with the dipstick was made by marketing, not engineering.

It's just not a common grade of oil.
