Curb Weight
I feel like 3,871 lbs. is heavy for a car of this size (m240ixdrive)...
I would usually have considered the m240 to be the small and nimble alternative to the 3 and 4 series, but it only weighs 100lbs less than the M340i xdrive and the m440i xdrive. I still love it and I still want one, but I really wish it weighed about 400 lbs less... |

Almost feels like they made an extra effort to make it weigh this much. Just unbelievable. 200LBS less should have been mandated. Otherwise what's the use, just stick with an M340i.

Weight is not a minor thing to complain about. It's one of the main things that makes a smaller car better than a bigger car. It's one of the main things other than price that would make me consider a 2 series over a 4 series or a 3 series.

The weight is painfully high, but smaller (affordable) AWD Coupes are becoming very rare in the market.

Completely agree with Danf72, weight is such an important issue. Especially for a compact-ish coupe. I understand the power is up too, but the handling and braking is irrelevant in the HP department. Just putting bigger tires/brakes doesn't always solve the weight handling issue either. I'm leaning toward the 230i, with a nominal tune, and 245s on each corner. Though, that car is over 3500lbs!

I will say that the car does not feel as "Heavy" as the number show. I compared it with the v6 turbo mustang (3650ish lbs) I was driving. The mustang felt heavy and horribly balanced. The M240 drives like a car that is much lighter and is near perfectly balanced.

Power to weight ratio is something I've pointed about before too. Something else that needs to also be pointed out is the additional standard tech. If we compare the standard options / tech from f22 to g42 you're bound to find quite a bit of extra weight. I wish I had a side by side list to compare because I think it's more than we realize. Also, rather than ask the question why does the 2 exist when you have the 3 and the 4? I pose the question, why does the 4 exist? If anything, the new g42 reminds me more of a 3series coupe than the 4 ever did (even before the grill issue) |

IDK how I feel about the weight tbh. I remember watching an old video about the Nissan GTR and the designers intentionally made the car heavy so it would grip better. Regardless of the weight this car is a rocket and hauls some serious ass.

The issue is weight, not power to weight ratio. You can take a 5000 lb vehicle, stick a 600-700 hp engine in it and still have a heavy pig.
Simply put, weight is always the nemesis of a good handling car. If you are only concerned about straight line acceleration, then you only need to care about power to weight. This car does carry its weight well, but you start throwing it aggressively into corners and you do become very aware of its weight. |

Can't understand how the G42 M240i is almost the same kerb weight as the M340i. It has the same drivetrain and standard options but in a smaller chassis therefore one would think it would at least be a couple hundred pounds lighter. Having driven the M240i it feels the same in terms of weight compared to my M340i. Disappointing.

I’m currently driving a 2017 718 Porsche, and the handling of that car versus my 2018 F22 I’d say the 718 is far more stable and difference in weight is noticeable. But still, on the track my F22 handled admirably and I didn’t feel like I was at a huge disadvantage to the Porsches. The G42 is pretty heavy, but I’d expect the improvements in the drivetrain will still make this car a lot of fun for those like me considering occasional HPDE days and not looking for a more serious track car. if you’re not doing HPDE is the extra weight really going to be a problem?

Light cars are fun to throw around. These days for me in the real world, jockeying around crazed RAM pickups, Jeep Cherokee Baja wannabe mom's and other assorted highway heroes, I'm glad for a little heft in the 240.

I don't mind a fairly heavy car that's properly balanced as a mostly daily driver and seldom if ever a trackday car. It makes for great road trip manners. The idea anyone would kick the new M240i out of bed over a few hundred pounds is ridiculous.
However, regarding pigs on the track the Gen6 Camaro SS 1LE puts any debate to rest that big heavy cars can not only perform, but even dominate (hence the inspiration for the license plate). Even the Tesla Model 3 Sport is a menace in autocross. |

The 230i is the same weight as the WRX STI, the Audi S3, snd several other 5-second 4 cylinder cars. 3,500 pounds isn’t heavy by today’s standards.

Apples / Oranges IMO, the xDrive 230i will be around 3700 lbs.

Keep in mind 150-200lbs is from the auto and AWD, then another 50lbs for the sunroof.
If it was a RWD manual with a slick top it would weigh 3550-3600lbs which is still slightly heavy but it's also a bigger more comfy car than the last gen car.
