not sure if this affects bmw's,but i know, the oiled type filters such as k&n used to damage the maf sensors on vag cars.i dont think they make a big difference either, from what ive read.

They should help you with a tune though, not a lot but definately (well, from the sources I found) should be part of the tuning process.

There's a few available I believe, the 'americanos' seem to like the BMS filter or Vishnu http://www.vishnutuning.com/bmw_dual_filter.htm, cheap too (also that the K&N's don't really make a difference over the 'lesser' brands)

Really? Never heard of that problem... Only problem I see is its an obvious one for the tech's to find (dual cone) when they service it. If you have that upgraded Im sure they'll look for more. Suppose its easy to install/uninstall (bit buggered if its a breakdown though)

They only cause a problem if they're over-oiled, and even then you can clean the MAF with some electrical cleaner.

Thing is if you buy a K&N it will be pre-oiled anyway at the right amount, so unless you do 40k-50k miles a year in nasty road track, fumes and crap you not really even going to need to clean and re0oil it.

I've used K&N for years and have always changed the car before the filter need cleaning.
