To badge or not to badge? that is the question!

As the title states

with or without, mit oder ohne, avec ou sans.

Which ever way you spell it out it's a question many owners ask themselves, as I am now.

Which is it to be?

Without.

Its easier to clean.

Anyone who's anyone will still know its a 320d regardless so thats not an issue.

I had mine deleted when I ordered it, purely because its a bitch cleaning in all the little corners.

I took the debadge as an option, as I think it looks cleaner.

Looking at the two photos of your motor, my instant reaction is debadge. Just looks nicer - nice way to compare the options!

Especially in the coupe, it sits too close to the centre and I don't see many totally level ones. It definitely is cleaner looking.

Ahhh you've heard of my cleaning OCD

I seem only to see poverty spec 118's and 320's with badges removed and not M Sports. I am not hiding the fact of the engine size but purely on looks.

Thumbs up

Far better with the badge removed.

My colleague had the dealer remove the badge from both our '320d's'.

It just 'Looks' better.

And no, an 'M' badge will not replace '320d'. That's for the domain of proper M cars

Looks better without, but it'll instantly become a 318d.

Your right. You never see too many 330's or 335's with badges removed. However the exhausts and engine notes do the talking.

Erm, I like it with the badge!
Gives it that old school BMW appeal, if you get what I mean.

Another car added to my "to be considered list" thanks

As for badging - keep it on, it was meant to be on the car as they are made from the factory with them on.

Ahh but you can specify to be built with or without the badging so that reason doesn't hold up.

If I do keep it badged I am considering painting with gloss black to keep the shadowline stealth look. This would be in keeping with the shodowline trim and black grill.

Here is a very poorly, shaky handed attempt at editing the badge to black!!

Oh, thats OK then!

Please don't paint it black, either keep it chrome or take it off.

I actually like all the badges to be intact on my cars as it tells me someone who has wanted the car for what it is has owned it, stupid I know!

I'll go controversial (or tell it like it is!) by saying that you don't see any de-badged 330 or 335's because it's a 'snob' thing... You can apply this to any car range that has a bottom through to top model..

People want to say to those not in the know, that they have a top of the range motor. Take the badge off and the car becomes fairly nondescript. OK, it may have twin tail pipes, or a distinguishing feature but again, that means little to Joe Public.... How many of can tell the difference across all other car ranges??

People de-badging 318 or 320's are doing it for three reasons;
  • To clean the lines
  • To make the car look like a higher range motor than what it is...
  • Both of the above
I've never de-badged a car (mainly because it's never really bothered me or I've wanted to shout that I had a GTI etc.. )... but if I had the choice, I'd be option 3.
