If BMW did not exist.....

If BMW did not exist what make of car would you drive. I think I would own VW (Top end Golf/Scirroco) or Porsche (Boxster or Cayman).

Within my own financial restrictions, a VW Golf GTI or R32, full leather recaro's and all the toys.

Love that car.......

As my username suggests it would be Porsche. Preferably an early 70's 911 of the RS or RSR variety.

However not practical for 40,000 miles per annum so could well be a Audi Avant S Line. No other brand or model seems to 'do it' for me at the moment.

Obvious for me really isn't it.

Ultimately, if the 'M' range didn't exist then the 911 Carrera 2S or if 'rich' - the 911 turbo.

I'd probably be driving either a Porsche or a Jaguar at this time.

Well, I came to BMW from Subaru and absolutely loved that (I still miss its pace if I'm honest) so would happily go back there.

However, I'm hoping to follow in the footsteps of Beemerbird and shift to a 'posh beetle' after I'm done here...

Whether it's Boxster, Cayman or 911 will be dependent on how buoyant hard metal roofing, cladding and rainscreens remain over the next 18 months!

Well seen as I've got a Bimmer for my daily drive, if I had the value of the BMW and there where no BMWs whatsoever must be used everyday I'd probably buy either an MGB GT with a strong engine and a shabby body, a Porsche 924S or something really big like a 500SEC - just to annoy my neighbours who think a 5 Series is an offensively large size of car

Sheps.. I'm with you on this. Even though I love everything about my 335, I miss my Scoob T20 for the pace and complete smile a minute factor (I don't miss its MPG, Insurance quotes or servicing intervals and costs!!). But like you I'd probably have the Cayman too and if I had the cash... a new Nissan GTR....

Merc

The new C Class is a good alternative to the E90 - a much better ownership prospect than an A4 IMO. I used to love the sticky up bonnet badge on the few I owned (noting that more a more don't have it now, sadly).

My last SL500 (R230) was a superb car.

Any coupe that appealed at the time. I've had a variety of cars and never been bothered about the badge, but have never been a saloon or estate car fan.

Always wanted a Porsche 911 though and will probably own one at some point.

Done the Jag thing. Would probably pick up a Ford Focus or the new Fiesta as my daily run-around, keeping something fun for other times.

Back to having a car that is light, handles AND rides exceptionally WITHOUT all the compromises. Down the narrow, undulating, sinuous, rippled B and unclassified roads I would mostly use, a RFT BMW is a heavy pig in a poke - where a Focus just skelps on and won't pitch you off the road.

There is a 50 mile stretch of average speed cameras (yellow vultures - 60 mph cars and down to 40mph for HGVs) on the A road straddling my home town. I could stretch the Focus' legs and have a ball of fun even at lower speeds.

Not bothered in the slightest about perceived "prestige" or 1/4 mile figures. Last time I was home I was using a 15 year old Transit Diesel Beater, with a bottle of Ginger, copy of the Sun and an old kitchen/Building material in the back for the cowp. Thoroughly enjoyed that. Parked atrociously in lay-bys with my feet up on the dash, Pie in hand reading the sport section of the Sun

The Focus has literally every optional feature that the BMW has. And I can also leave it parked anywhere without worrying about it. There is an advantage to driving the "grey man" of motor cars Always "beneath the radar".

D.
