I recently put in a quart in my 335i. I was able to buy 3 cases of 0W-40 M1 for $5 each. Personally, $5 isn't worth the time for me to go to a dealer.

No need to go to the dealer (unless you want to buy their top up oil)

Just fill it up with a litre / quart of the correct oil for your car.

hen after a couple of minutes the warning will go.

I would go with, in order:

1. Oil from the dealer
2. Castrol 0W-30 (NOT the 5W-30)
3. Mobil 1 0W-40 (NOT the 5W-30)

It is probably worth a trip to the dealer for this one quart and a couple of extra to keep in the garage.

Also, since this is new to you, be careful with fluids in general. What you can buy in your average American parts store does not go into a German car. Windshield washer fluid and DOT 4 brake fluid being the two exceptions.
