LL01 vs LL04

Hi, newbie who has been lurking for a while.

Need to ask about the preferred engine oil for a E93 330i Msport (Aug07).

My searching of the forum suggests that LL04 is what I need but reading the manual is lists 3 oil grades in the preferred list

LL01
LL01 FE
LL04

Have always put Mobil 1 0-40 into my 3ers, but this is my first of the E9x series.

Or am I worried over nothing?

TIA

LL01 is an older specification than LL04. I'd use what the manual says. Then there can never be any argument on oil related warranty issues.

I think the LL specs are related to the year they were brought in. LL01 is from 2001 and LL04 is from 2004.

I seem to recall LL01 and LL04 are basically the same oil, but the LL04 has reduced sulphur compound content, in order to ensure the diesel particulate filters (if fitted, not all diesels had them as standard from this period) are not damaged. Not sure if this has any relevance to petrols. In terms of engine /turbo lubrication / protection I don't think there is any decernable difference between LL01/04.

This is all from memory so don't take this as gospel.

(PS I assume you should really be using 0W30 oils, not Mobil 0W40 spec oils - not that theres really a huge difference in performance)
