45 Miles added to car after service repair!!
Took my 2009 E93 335i in 2 days ago for a rattle I heard when the top was closed and they put me in a damn dodge caliber even though I called 2 weeks ahead to make an appointment (this is the dealer i bought the car from). The called me the night I dropped my car off and told me they have to keep it over night because they need to localize the rattle. Next day they told me that they localized the rattle and are now fixing it and my car would be ready the next day.
I go to pick up my car and after I do a walk-around I go inside to check the MPG and Trip miles that I always reset before I bring it in for service just to see how much they drive the car and how hard they drive it. I saw 45 miles added to the trip and had an average of 12.5MPG for these 45 miles! I went back in and asked my SA what normal millage would be for service for a rattle and he took a while to answer and said "well if they have to drive it for a while to find out where its coming from, it could be up to 5 miles". I said "Oh, well my car has 45 miles on it and an average of 12.5mpg" I brought the car in with miles under 895miles and got it back with 940 miles. The car is not even broken in yet and I have been babying the car and now some asshole added 45 miles to it and averaged 12.5mpg which means he abused the shit out of it. The manager was not in tonight and he is supposed to contact me tomorrow. Has this happened to anyone? What should I do? Im mostly pissed because the car was still in a break-in period. They didnt even have the courtesy to fill my car up with gas, they gave it to me with less than a 1/4 tank when I brought it in with 1/2 tank.

I'm flipping out but I have no idea what I can do. What am I supposed to do ask for reimbursement for miles and gas? I'm not dying for $30, even $100. I'm pissed because someone took my car home and for a joy ride. The tech was probably a kid and decided to have a little fun with a convertible 09 335... Best part is that they tried to lower the "miles out" and put 930 instead of 941.

My dealership always resets the odo and mpg every time, not really sure why. They kept my car for two days for a routine oil change, but gave me a X3. When I picked up the 335, there were 5 extra miles on it!! I went ballistic and demanded they credit me 58.5 cents/mi. or I wont give them all 5's!
All kidding aside, I think 5 or so should be the max. That's a reasonable amount. 40-50 is not acceptable. I put around 800 on their X3 though. j/k |

At least they did it towards the end of your break in period, so it's not AS bad as if the car had 200 miles on it. BUT, not to give the dealer a break or anything, if the car was left idling it could have actually gotten 12.5 mpg, doesn't explain the miles though.

They probably use it as a demo....!
Last time I took my car to replace the sunroof and when I pick up the car I noticed that they scratched the alumium trim around the shifter and they left greasy fingerprint inside, around the sunroof... After complaining they replaced the trim and clean the car...but I had to go back to the dealer and lost another half day of my job

Too late for the car, yes. But you yourself haven't WOT'd it yet, so it'll still be a new experience and amazing sound for you. Think of it like that.

So what are the negatives of not "breaking-in" a 335i? I heard these cars dont even have a break in period since the engines are pushed to the max on a dyno and the cars are pushed pretty hard during PDI.

That could be true. We don't know what BMW does to the engines before they get on the boat. But one thing about not breaking in an engine, is that it poses a problem of oil seals not sealing correctly causing leaks down the road on the block.

After watching the NatGeo Ultimate Factories show on BMW, I lost a lot of faith in the so-called already broken-in thing and how great BMW is. It's all about driving and feel--that's what the cars excel at. They are mass-produced vehicles with a lot of little defects as we all know. I wouldn't say they don't require any break-in. It's not like a BMWs defy mechanical engineering. Besides, why do people second-guess the owner's manual?
