Insulting Part Ex offers
Spotted a 335i M sport touring at local dealer [Sandal in Wakefield] for a shade under £20k - had mine two years now so keeping an eye out and interested enough to put a call in.
On the subject of my 64000 mile May 2006/06 plate ex bmw demo 330d sport, black, lemon leather, auto, heated seats, prof nav, fbmwsh, good tyres (2 new rear alloys!) with no dents and in need of a good polish... £12000 as p/x, based on book of £17800, reduced to £14500 for the miles, hence their offer of £12000 so they could trun some profit on it. Fair play to the salesman, he was apologetic and a bit embarrased, but if you though a 'prestige' exec diesel motor would avoid alfa 166 style depreciation, think again. [For the record in cost me £30500 in October 2006] So thats one 335i I wont be buying... Anyone else recently insulted to this extent..? |

Dealers are stuffed with used cars. You may find it insulting but its only worth what someone is willing to pay. The dealer didn't want it unless it was cheap. Don't take it personally. Nothing in the trade is getting anything close to book price at present.

Funny isn't it, I bought my 135i from Sandal Wakefield a couple of months ago, the reason I dealt with them was because they were head and shoulders better on the cost to change, than any other dealer.and we're talking thousands better.
This was before the credit crunch though. |

to be fair 64K is quite high mileage for re-sale. As others have said dealers are stuffed with cars they are trying to get rid off. Out of interest how much are they going for privately.
Don;t forget that trade in price is just the starting point, plus you would manage to get a discount on the one you are buying. They do need to make some profit in the deal... I managed to get 20% of mine from the dealer and just under a grand extra on the trade in price for mine a few weeks ago. J. |

I never look at the p/ex price or the sticker price on the car I want. The only number I am interested in is the cost to change.
Looking at the cost to change removes all of the emotive low p/ex offers and reduced sticker prices. It really leaves the saleman nowhere to hide. I work out how much I want to spend if the price is met or I get it for less great. if not I walk. I always tell them upfront that the number I want to look at is the cost to change and it shoul cut out all the BS. |

I've seen some really tempting prices on 911s and would love to change. Unfortunately I am tied into BMW's finance and know that the settlement figure on my car will be higher than its curent market value.

There has to be light at the end of the tunnel though surely. I want a 911 like Gav does. I invariably get what I want as well, so I've been told. Must be worth it is all I can say. |

So how do you know if you're getting a deal Example, the car you want is £28k, the dealer says he wants’ yours and £12k You don't know if they have given you less than book for yours |

Obviously some 'leg work' is invloved in ascertaining a guesstimate of your own cars' value, but that isn't rocket science and knowing what mark up the dealer works on helps. But I have found when it comes to talking seriously about the deal and they know you're serious, I ask what their mark up is or 'how much have you got in that car then' ie. the one they're selling. Quite often begets a raised eyebrow and a grin but then the answer comes out. Knowing what they've got to 'play with' gives you as a buyer, a rough indication of what they can stretch to in terms of doing a deal. Hope that makes sense? |

Perfect sense But you still need to know what yours is worth BB and you can call "change up" what you like one still has to do metal arithmetic to know if your both talking the same language. Another way to look at it is Car you're looking at is £28k Yours books at £12k Before talking your short £16k After talks £13k sounds about what you looking at spending. I can't imagine going out and telling the dealer, I have £13k and my car without the mental maths first. |

If you have any savings you could tie in it might be worth re-financing to reconcile market value and settlement a bit quicker. I just did this and should break even on my car sometime in the next year (will save a couple of £k on interest as well). Especially if personal loan rates reduce following todays interest rate cut.

I paid my car loan back early - really early, and saved £3,000 on interest using that method.
Obviously, when beemerbird says the price to change is the only important one, it is based upon your own estimation of what your car is worth (usually too high) and the level of discount the dealer has to play with (usually more than the dealer is willing to do). This gives you a ball park figure to change and if you are prepared to accept roundabout that figure then, job done. |

Sorry, I maybe didn't make it clear Del. What I meant was the figure would be in my little head, not revealed to the dealer until I've allowed him to waffle on about part-ex prices etc and I would still be armed with a pretty good idea of what my car is worth as a part-ex to dealer.

I think we all go out and know how much we have to spend, but still need to know how much is being trimmed off the deal, and from what end, PX or new car. We all get shafted long term though. |

I have been considering this. I'm going to keep an eye on the interest rates and do some sums. Hate being tied into anything. my own fault really as I didn't consider the deal I signed up to carefully enough. Won't happen again!
