Overfilled engine oil@@

Picked up the a black sedan last night and went out to drive a big this afternoon. Found that the oil level is too high and oil leaked out from the engine. I guess I should be going back to visit the service department so soon@@

Where did the oil leak from, what part of the engine. It's a sealed system therefore any leak is a bad sign.

it's from the cap where u can add in more oil. Dont know if this is too bad. Was asking a frd who does mechanical works for toyota and he told me this is not too big of problem nothing to worry about. I guess I will have to wait until Monday to figure it out then.

Unless there is oil leaking from the actual engine somewhere, I would ASSume that he spilled oil when adding AND overfilled it.

Indicator is showing; > MAX

The manual says to go directly to the dealer, because the engine can be damaged.

Then don't drive it unless they tell you to bring it in. I had an X5 that was overfilled, I rang the dealer and they came around put a tub down the diff stick and sucked out a couple cup fulls of oil. I know you don't have a dip stick in the M3 but I would contact them first.

There is a possibility they might not have tightened that cap properly. You should of course go to the dealer ASAP.

they just wanted to make sure you have enough oil reserve just in case you ran out.

When you cleaned the spilled oil and noticed it came out under the reservoir cap, did you notice if the rubber gasket under the cap was off the cap or loose from the cap? It seem like that is a common problem that the technician just cannot put the cap on correctly. You should check that the cap is on correctly everytime the technician changes your oil.

Yes that was what I found. The rubber ring attached to the cap actually came off when I un-capped it. I put it back into the place it is supposed to be and will run the engine again to see if the leak still happens or not. But Monday morning, I am heading back to the dealership for sure.

+1 you can seriously damage your engine by overfilling.

well the reason i ask is that i just brought my car to the dealer today for a top off of 1 quart as requested by the idrive.

After the fill up it read one tick below max. I guess I am one of the lucky ones?

It did however take over an hour for the computer to re-read the level. It just kept showing the clock. I was looking to see if anyone knew how that sensor worked.

it was fine after dealership took care of it. I have 14000kms and already had to do the "Add 1L" twice. You mentioned that you brought your car to dealership for that? Did they charge you for that? Because it cost me $18 for 1 L of motor oil when I added it myself.

You will blow seals once that engine oil gets hot and expands.
