Blown Away

So I just come off the highway to an empty lane at the traffic light next to a large Chevy Silverado 4x4 pickup. I figure I'll jump out in front when the light changes. Light goes green and I push it. I jump ahead far enough to see and hear his tires smoking. I dropped it into third too early to watch that he is coming up like a freakin' rocket ship. He accelerates so fast I can only watch, with my foot on the floor, as he blows by. I was astounded, with the only small thing being that he left huge clouds of black smoke from his tailpipe at the next 2 lights, making me think he blew something in his engine.

This thing must have had in the 500 bhp to literally fly by my 335i. I think I'm going to look into the new Chevy Camaro.

To my 335's defense, the stupid DTC was on and I thought the race was already over when the other guy decided to play. But I seem to remember this car was faster when I first bought it.

Probably a chipped diesel with propane injection. There were quite a few kits when I had my F250 and you could easily put down 450whp+ with 800lb+ torque.

The thing is, I think it was a gasoline engine, cuz it didn't smell like unburnt diesel fuel. Everytime he stepped on the "gas" pedal it let out smoke, thick and black. When he took off at the second light, with normal traffic in front of him, the smoke was so thick I almost lost sight of the lane. He didn't seem to lose horsepower, cuz he later broke the wheels free at 20mph or so.

I too can break them free in second gear, and spin them all day in first gear, but I'm too worried about damaging my baby. I do think he broke something and he'll be in the shop soon.

I just got my 335 back from BMW a week ago after new plugs, and 2 new fuel injectors. Before that, early this summer, it was a new fuel pump and computer. Thankfully all under warranty, but its been a rough summer for my 335.

Thick black smoke is another indicator of a modded diesel. The sound is pretty hard to mistake too. When I had a modded T444e it used to belch smoke like a steam train under WOT.

It is almost certainly a modified diesel truck that is making big power. Don't worry about it, there are lots of random vehicle out there that are much much faster than they look (ie modified WRX wagon)

Go pick on a 328 or two to feel better?

When I used to take my car to the drag strip, there'd be a couple of huge GMC Duramax diesel trucks... they'd consistently run sub-12 second 1/4 mile times!

If he let out thick black smoke when he accelerated hard..it was a duramax diesel...definitely chipped. I use to borrow my friends Silverado and smoke people out ..also amazing the crap out of onlookers. He probably had mad torque levels.

If it was shooting out heavy black smoke out of the exhaust, it was a diesel. Those are very east to get power out of and have massive amounts of torque. Just look at Gale Banks Power and BullyDog to see what could be done to these diesels. I have seen Diesels run in the 11's.

Yep, I used to run with the modified diesel truck crowd (Dodge/Cummins turbodiesels.) I had the older I-6 Cummins 5.9L with the Bosch P7100 mechanical injector pump. The stock engine was rated at 180 HP and 420 ft-lbs at the flywheel. For about $225 I bought a TST "fueling plate" for the pump. I ran the #6 plate, which was rated at 250 HP and 635 TQ. My truck, with over 100,000 miles on it, dyno'd at 235 HP at the rear wheels. With drivetrain losses, I figure that $225 plate added over 100 HP. Of course, I was running 40 PSI of boost too!

A relative of mine has an F350 diesel that has an exhaust, intake and chip. He made 500hp and over 800 ft lbs. of torque. If he would put a larger turbo on it, he would get over 1000 ft lbs. of torque. These trucks are insane, but not my cup of tea no matter how fast they are.

You can always get a Mercedes or BMW diesel truck. That way you get the looks and the speed

Definitely not something to get upset about. You're comparing your car to something with over twice the displacement and no handling ability whatever. He's not going to make it around a few turns any better than you're going to tow a 5th wheel horse trailer.

You learn something new everyday. I knew diesels had enough torque to pull a house, but didn't know people were getting that kind of HP out of them. I have a boat I tow with an older Expedition, so I'm thinking of replacing the Expy with some monster diesel truck. Then I'll have the best of both worlds.

Stay away from the 6L Ford. I had the older international 7.3L and it was a tank, but the 6.0 has had so many problems that Ford broke their contract with International.
