TopTier Gas: Are you watching out for this all the time?
I am used to go to QT or other toptier gas places.
Remember my last 2009 535i needing carbon build blast cleanup per what dealer told me those days to follow on kind of gas stations to visit! X6/Ducati is filled per spec all the time but Jacksonville where I am visiting had to use RaceTrac to fill in full! Not listed under TopTier gas site!

Just put in a bottle of Chevron Techron every 3K miles and you shouldn't have to worry about carbon build up. BMW even sells Techron but rebranded with the BMW logo at double the price.

we were hit by the Colonial Pipeline shutdown, and most stations around me currently have only 87 octane fuel. so far I've only had to fill up a half tank (already have Techron treatment about 500 miles in). hopefully 93 will be back next week.

Isn't the issue with DI engines that the traditional mixture of fuel and air don't pass by the intake ports? How would an additive help here if the fuel is sprayed directly into the cylinder? [Note: Recalling info from my N54, don't recall if this was addressed on the B58]

But yes, techron will still help clear carbon off the piston heads and cylinder walls as well as the injectors. |

is $12-14 per treatment really such a crazy thing to do?

A little off topic but thought I'd share. Recently installed a Catted DP on my F95 X5m with racechip. Last fill up before install was a local gas station, so likely not top tier. After a couple days, got a CEL. Cleared the code and filled up at a Citgo that is top tier. Went 4 tanks only filling up at that station and no CEL. 2 days ago, had to fill at an Irving station and wouldn't you know it, CEL.
Never wouldve occurred to md that fuel quality could have caused a CEL in the Catted DP but it's perplexing to think that 4 full tanks (roughly 1200 miles of easy and hard driving) and no CEL from one station, and after only using a quarter tank from 2 others, CEL both times... Maybe there's something to the top tier gas thing, especially for tuned vehicles. When this tank is done, I'm going to clear any codes and refill at Citgo and see what happens. |

The computer for the ignition tries to advance the timing as far as it can go to the threshold of pinging. The higher the octane, the higher it can adjust the timing and boost. A tuned engine may end up increasing the maximum boost, and if you use the vehicle hard, it will be trying to adjust the timing probably beyond the limits. Any slight deposits anywhere in there can cause pinging, too, because they can create isolated hot spots. The only way you get maximum performance (and many people never use that, so may not notice) is to keep the combustion chamber clean and the octane at or above the recommended level. More usually doesn't help, but may on a tuned engine.
I think it's seven of the largest auto manufacturers collaborated to come up with the Top Tier organization to overcome issues they were seeing...it's hard to get even two to often agree, so there must be something to this...they also don't have a financial interest in the refiners, so I doubt they're getting any benefit from that side of the equation for suggesting the use of Top Tier suppliers in the user's manual. |
