2018 X3 Wheel/Rim Question-When To Upgrade
Bought in March a 2018 CPO X3 which had the base 18 inch wheels.
I really wanted the 19 but it was hard enough getting one with apple play. So my question....what makes sense. 1) Should I wait until the tires need replaced in 20-25K miles THEN just upgrade to 19 inch OR do it now? 2) I really prefer black rims, I see OEMs for sale, but was told only by directly through BMW, is that true? 3) How much is reasonable/how hard will it be for me to sell my 18 inch rims to help pay for the 19 inches? Thanks. |

2018 X3 Wheel/Rim Question-When To Upgrade
Are you ok with purchasing the 19' wheels and tires then possibly getting money back later after you sell your 18s? I think its all on your financial situation and how long your willing to wait for a buyer for the 18s.
You can buy wheels / tires wherever you want. Just make sure the size of the tires dont affect the Xdrive. I dont remember the percentage you could change for the Xdrive to be ok. Also take into account your SA. Are they going to be make a fuss over you purchasing different size tires? I dont think there is a lot of demand for stock 18' wheels. You could always post them for sale on Craigslist or in the Member Classified section |

Keep the 18s to put back on when you go to sell or trade the car in. Buy the 19s you want now and enjoy it as you'd like it!

You can buy wheels and tires wherever you want. They just need to fit. A note for the tires - depending on your insurance or if the car is still under warranty, it can be mandatory to mount only stared tires (manufacturer approved).
Price depends on the source, type of the wheels and so on. Same goes for tires. Many US members are buying from tirerack There is a fitment guide, which will tell you what wheels/tires fit to your vehicle. Go and explore the internet a bit.

You will pay a ridiculous price from the dealer and you will be limited to BMW's styles. If you like those, then fine, but buy them elsewhere. But most people who upgrade don't buy BMW wheels. Just ignore the dealer. You can put 19s on your car. Do some searches and reading. Forums like this are full of "I got new wheels" threads. Search and look at some pictures. You are clearly so eager to do this that you will make a decision you will regret later if you don't take a step back and educate yourself a bit.

I also picked up a CPO 2018 M40i recently. I have the 19 inch rims and I'd like to put snow tires on them eventually. I would like to pick up a set of 20 inch wheels but I remember seeing somewhere in iDrive where you can set the tire size and rating. I only saw 19 inch tires as an option. Can I put 20 inch on this car?

Not sure about iDrive 6, but IDrive 7 has all season/winter or summer settings independent of wheel size.

Let me ask:
1. What do you recommend in terms of tire/size? Right now I have 18. I cannot see doing 21 inch. For all season driving is 19/20 good? I wasn’t sure if 19 is enough of an upgrade or if 20 would be too drastic. 2. I don’t want tacky rims. Most after market rims especially on a BMW have that feel. I also am of the view don’t put M wheels on a non M. Do you agree? Ideally I wanted rims that were black or darker silver/grey, but nothing which doesn’t look natural. 3. My car is under warranty, used certified, for over another year. Dealer said I got 15-20k left on my tires. I’d like to do the switch as cost effectively as possible, which means the 18 inch rims and if possible tires must be sold. What is the market like and is it too ‘late’ to get any value for my tires now, and if not, how much longer? What’s the best way to do this exchange? |

There are many attractive deals on used OEM wheels in the 19", 20", and 21" sizes in the Members Classifieds section

From what I have been told, it makes sense to just run the current tires down, then when they need replaced, by the new rims and tires I want.
Let me ask, my current are the base 18 inch, is there a real big difference from the 19/20 inch? I'm not sure which size I want to go with when I switch. |

Couple of follow up questions:
1. My current tires are 4/32 front and 5/32 rear. Is it time to replace or about how many miles do I have left? 2. I am replacing the 18 inch with 19 most likely, maybe 20. I like this design but is it meant for an M or M sport, because mine is the X30i and I always felt putting M or M sport on non M sports was trashy/poser. This looks the same but I do not see the M on the center lug nut. 3. What is the best way to go about purchasing new rims and wheels? -Buy them online, together and have them shipped to an independent shop to install on the car? -Or will they need to be bolted on the wheel then installed on the car and best done by a BMW dealer? 4. As for selling, since my tires will be run down, what is the best way to sell? -Just list them somewhere online as is, or get the rims removed from the tire? |
