Anyone bought a set of 18 inch CUSTOM wheels? Not 19 inch, not OEM wheels.
Anyone? and why?
For me, I've been considering to buy a set of 18 inch custom wheels for several reasons: 1) Wider selection of 18-inch tires, easier to find. 2) Should give better ride (softer) than 19-inch. Because the aspect ratio (between the rim and ground) is thicker (35 & 40 aspect ratio vs. 30 & 35). 3) and of course, 18-inch wheels are little cheaper than 19-inch wheels. 4) 18-inch tires have correct in tire overall diameter, for accurate MPH readout (yes, there are 1%-5% errors). 19-inch tires are slightly bigger in diameter, they may give you wrong MPH readout. 5) A 18-inch wheel + tire weighs about 2 pounds lighter than 19-inch wheel * tire. Your thoughts?? I am not against 19-inch wheels & tires, but I see that there are more benefits in owning a set of 18-inch wheels & tires than 19...

I'm with you, I'd rather have a forged lightweight 18s on my E90 than 19s. There is no handling benefit going from 18s to 19s and for my style of driving I want the lightest wheel/tire combo possible (our cars are heavy enough as it is). Right now I'm debating to whether to buy a set of real non RFT tires (PS2s or RE050s) and mount them on my 162s or go ahead and get the forged 18s and new tires.

A lot of folks run 18" aftermarket wheels. I have Velocity Motoring CSL replicas 18x8.5 and 18x9.5, and OZ Ultraleggera 18x9's, and the stock Style 162's. I've tried 19's (Morr Alloy) and 17's (Kosei K1's for drag radials on the back) as well...decided to stay in the 18" arena .

All your reasons for buying 18" wheels are good. The real only reason for 19" is they look good, or more to the point, more radical. For a lot of posters that's the clincher.

5: I haven't personally weighed tires by themselves, but if you think about it, a 19" tire will have less sidewall = less material. Weight also depends on the tire itself. As for the wheel, the weight difference between out 18" and 19" wheels is only about 1lb. Your other reasons for getting an 18" wheel are good reasons. Let me know if you need any more help.
