Anyone recently trade an '05 Supercharged 3.0 Z4 to Budd's

Just wondering if anyone here has recently traded an '05 Supercharged 3.0 Z4 to one of Budd's dealerships? Just asking as I'm going to take a look at it tomorrow and wanted to see if I can get some history on the car.

Not me. What kind of supercharger is it? And more importantly, will they cover it under their CPO warranty?

No chance of a CPO with it, the aftermarket insurance companies won't even touch it (as the sales staff figured out in front of me). If my mechanic thinks it's been well cared for it could be a very good deal, as I'm sure the price will drop no that it comes no warranty. As for all the aftermaket toys on it, I'm leaving to look at it now so I'll let everyone know when I do. If they don't have a full history on who/where the installs were done I see another price drop.

Took a look at the car yesterday, it's got a Technik Engineering superchargers. I don't know too much (anything other than their website info) about their products, so it's off for a PPI Power

I thought Technik went out of business with their superchargers?
They're great units though. Built off of ASA rotrex superchargers.
Reliable units and you shouldn't have any problems.

If you do buy this car though, come spring you and I should have some fun at the track.

By spring I'm hoping my baby will be hitting 360hp.

Pulled the trigger...

Took the car to Engineered Automotive in Vaughan for a PPI, they seemed to think it's in pretty good shape. They had good things to say about the supercharger unit in terms of both quality and reliability, also good things to say about the Z4M Eisenmann exhaust attached with a Z4M rear bumper (or a modified Z4 bumper) to make it fit. Some nice fit and finish on it with the roundel logo and Z4 logo embroidered on the seats. The rims that were on it (19" Diablo's) either didn't fit properly or were run with no air in them as the sidewalls of both rear tires were destroyed (good thing I've got a set of OEM Z4M rims to put on it, thanks GP20). A rear spoiler that I wasn't too keen on at first has really started to grow on me. White side lenses and third brake light. Stubby antenna. Aluminum pedal set. The car still has a year of original warranty on it but if anything happens to the drivetrain I'm sure BMW will say there is no warranty due to the supercharger (calculated risk). All in all I think I've scored a pretty good replacement for my 2003 Z4 who's lease has come due.

pbdm4k - I'd love to get some track time in this baby. I've never taken my car on the track but I typically go to Shannonville twice per year on my bike. I'm sure a little bit of the knowledge will carry over but I think I'll have some learning to do. Keep me posted for track days you're heading to for next year.

I don't know, but I would never buy that thing without some kind of warranty to back it up. Unless you have the money to just buy it as a track toy.

If Budd's wants to get rid of it, I would push them to CPO it. They have their "Performance center" where you can Dinan the twin turbo 3 litre which, since they're being done at the dealer, should not void the warranty. So I don't see why chipping a car is ok but supercharging it isn't.

I would be very weary of owning a car that has been modded like that and has worn out to sh*t tires 'cause it's obvious the previous owner really pushed the car. So I think long-term reliability will be an issue, and I think resale will be an issue.

Sorry to be such a pooper, but I thought I'd give you a different perspective so you can make a well thought out decision.

I know that resale will be an issue, any type of modified car has a very limited buyers market. You're right, buying without a warranty on the drivetrain is a bit of a risk, but I am rolling the dice. That being said I'm confident in the PPI from Engineered Auto, they were Canada's first Dinan dealer and up until a few years ago were also there distributor, in their opinion they've seen far less problems with supercharged engines versus modified 335 Twin Turbo motor due to poor intercooling (has been recently addressed by BMW). I think you misread my post about the tyres, they weren't worn out, they were either not maintained at correct pressure or were just an incorrect fit that caused the failure. They were far more bling than performance. It is a bit f a gamble, but I got a 2005 Z4 with only 10,000km on it, with over $15,000 in modifications, for only $32,500. The way I'm looking at it, compared to the price of other Z4's on the market it's a pretty good deal. As for getting Budd's to CPO it, will never happen, warranty coverage is provided by BMW corporate not individual dealers, and corporate will never certify aftermarket parts. Even Dinan equipment would not be CPO'd but it may covered by warranty from Dinan. As for long term reliability, anytime you modify an engine to increase power you lose longevity, I'm gambling on the high quality of the motor to begin with, my mechanics recommendation, and a bit of god juju. Wish me luck.

For that price, I would've imported a Z4M from the US. But short of that, I do wish you the best of luck, and I hope the car gives you many, many years of enjoyment! Maybe I'll get to see it if we have a meet.

I'm in for hanging out with other Z4 owners. Here's a great general BMW meet...

www.tedfest.net

Always some really cool cars, including an M1 there 2 years ago. Also really cool people. Hope to see you there.
