NY Times: Car Insurance May Not Cover You at the Track

An interesting article on how insurance companies are eliminating all coverage for any accidents on a track.

That article is about a year too late. Most insurers dropped coverage for 'on track' events mid-summer of 2007. FYI: I use WSIB for track insurance, as do several others in my club. So far nothing but good things to say about them. They're quick to answer questions and always very helpful.

I think NASA is cool with convertibles. Actually, I know they are cool with bone stock Z4 converts on track. Organization and not facility make the rules. I think.

A ton of tracks and clubs let verts run.

About the OT, this is a surprise? I didn't know any regular insurance companies still covered on track.

I assumed the loopholes of "drivers education" and "non-timed event" were in my favor. Aparently those safety's don't fly anymore.

Very strange.

By the way, my Allstate agent (NJ) confirmed by email that they would cover HPDE as long as it is not racing. I emailed him the link to PDA HPDE and he verified coverage with claims and underwriting at Allstate.

Better get it in writing and have it signed. They always say you're covered, till something actually happens. Then all of a sudden they have amnesia and can't remember to ever saying it.

Great example of that happening to one of the members on here

Thanks for the advice. That's why I have it in an e-mail from him, with the link next to it. Not as good as signed paper. But still somehow in writing. (see below). Hope I never need to make a claim or go in front of a judge with this.

Hi xxx, both underwriting and claims told me that as long as there

Subject: Performance Driving Driver Education

Dear yyy,

Hope you are doing fine. Below a link to the activity that I am
considering.

http://www.pdadrivingschool.com/article.php?id=10

Description:
PDA track events are driver education events, teaching high performance
driving techniques on track in a controlled environment. There is no
racing, race instruction or timing. These events are also known as HPDE
(High Performance Driver Education). All drivers are registered into
groups based on their track experience. Groups are "on track" in
separate sessions, with safety workers and flaggers provided.

Kindly let me know if this is covered. If not, could you kindly provide
me the exclusion language in the contract that applies. Additionally,
let me know what it would take to have this type of activities covered
at a reasonable cost. (I am just interested in trying it out).

....

Email is better than nothing, but I still wouldn't assume your covered on a large claim.

I would get it in written and signed form (or at least have your agent sign a printed copy of the email). See link below for an account of someone who had an accident and was denied coverage:

don't assume, read the exclusions section of your coverage contract.

The 'old' language implies coverage for HPDE because only "timed events" are mentioned in the exclusions. The 'new' language specially excludes everything that happens on a 'racing surface' (ie regardless of timing equipment being or not being present)

You have to read your own language because it differs by carrier and by state.

In all honesty, taking the gamble of relying on regular insurance to cover on track incidents is not worth the risk. Buy real track insurance.

But for those of us who occasionally track, the high cost of track insurance is out of reach. What did I hear...something like 2 grand for track insurance?

WSIB is 3% of agreed upon value of car as the premium. $2500 deductible. Not bad in my book. The question is whether or not you are comfortable eating the $40k+ if you total your car. If not, then $1200 per year for insurance is really the only option (or not going to the track at all, but c'mon ).
