OEM alarm quote @ JMK BMW

so i asked my SA how much will it cost to get an OEM alarm installed in my 335.. he said about 550. includes installation and activation

ok.. so then i asked how much will it cost if i bought the alarm and installed it, only need the programming.. he said it takes about 2 hours @ 120. = 240!! ! simply to activate it..

shizzz.. i can prob buy the alarm from circle bmw for approx 250. and install it myself as my car is pre-wire for the alarm.. but if i'm paying 240 for the activation.. meaning i'll be paying 490 in total.. i might as well pay the 550. and let them do the work..

on my e46.. i installed the alarm myself, went to get it activated for 1/2 hour job =50. bucks..

is 240 sound a bit steep to simply activate/program the alarm??

There should be a set labor time for it, I would suggest asking another dealer how much they charge to get an idea of the cost.

I'm been told that it should be a quick (30-60 min) "activation" by other forum members.. is this right? anyone in here works at a bmw shop that can confirm this?

btw: the SA made it sound that they had to program something w/ idrive.. ??

ok.. so i called circle bmw.. the alarm will cost $235. + installation and activation $180. (1.5 hr labor) total $415.

I've been a BMW owner since 2002 and I still don't understand why we need to shop around to get the best price.. it's all BMW..

oh well..

i'm curious why anybody would want an alarm in the first place. The car has BMW Assist that can locate the car on map, down to about a one-half block radius if its ever stolen.

Mixed reviews about the OEM alarm -- general consensus seems to be that it's useless?

+1

you really dont need an alarm. your car isnt going anywhere, unless someone has your key. if your alarm goes off your window is already broken, so whats the point of it?

jaja.. adding a 504D shock sensor.. have you guys not heard about that?.. i have it on my e46 and as soon as someone touches my car.. or a bird shits on it.. alarm triggers.. I don't want anyone leaning or sitting on my ride..

you are right without the shock sensor, the alarm is basically useless..

here is the link to the DIY: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45815

BMW should include this on their OEM Alarms, it just makes sense to have this..

I was debating on whether or not to get the alarm.. Then I decided that I would just take the risk, and if it does get stolen, hopefully I won't see the car anymore...

not really concern if it gets stolen.. as alarm prob will not matter.. if they wanted, they'll take it regardless.. but i like to know that alarm will trigger if someone taps on car and keep people away from it..

My thinking is that if people/ vagrants see the red light, they will think twice about breaking into a car. This is why an alarm may be the right thing to do.. (just having my car broken into two days ago)

The 504D shock sensor is interesting to me. Is there any visual sign that the car is protect by alarm, or would I have to hang one of those signs?

I got the alarm to lower my insurance and just so that I can hear the beep to confirm that my car is locked.

Yep, that's what I thought... until some a-holes got into my condo garage at night and beat the crap out of my baby. Windshield and rear window shattered, hood smashed, side mirrors stolen and housings broken. I can go on.... ~ $6,500 in damages, not to mention extra gray hairs and a month without a car, which is still in the shop. So I'm shopping for an alarm now and since Life Quality BMW quoted me $799+tx... looks like I'm going to call Circle BMW.

I think I would invest in a camera security system instead. That sucks, seems like someone really has it out for you.

328 - That's the first thing people tell me when I share the story, but I really don't think so. I have no enemies.. The camera security system is also in the works, but since you mentioned it, do you have any particular recommendation? A full pro install runs 2k +, I was thinking to get a Q-see DVR system with 4 day/night cams for ~550 and install myself.
Anyone here has experience with security systems?
