Anyone here ever get a ticket for window tint?
According to NY law, you can only get 70% on the sides, and only top 6 inches on the front... anyone had any problems with darker tints? I am thinking about getting 50%.
Also, if the front is tinted, would removing inspection stickers scratch the tint? Last, any rec'd installers in NY/NJ? Thanks! |

neva tried online, always use to go to the dmv....50% seems really light and prob would be a waste of your hard earned money...the lightest ive seen was 35%

I've seen 50% a few members have it, it looks good if your going for a classy look i wanted people to able to see me still so cops don't give me trouble, also it depends on the color of the car i have black on black so 40% looks darker on mine then i would on other colors

I live in PA but we have the same 70% law here. I have 35% tint and never once have been pulled over. I have a black car with pretty light interior so the tint doesn't look dark on my car.

Yes I have for 5% tint...........35% tint they usually just dont pull you over for it unless ur speeding and then ur screwed........
I have 35% tint now and I dont even worry about it, 35% gives the car a nice contrast and doesn't look ghetto.........35%tint is the darkest I would go if you are still trying to keep your car classy..... |

i had the same tint that i have on my 335i on my old S60R. Huper Optik 30.
only got ticketed once, and that was instead of getting a ticket for 93 in a 50, highway patrol gave me two tint tickets and sent me on my way. they wont bother you too much if you stick to about 35% and dont get their attention with other things, like no front plate. just an FYI, to dispel the misunderstanding that 30% is legal, NYS law dictates at least 70% Visible Light Transmitted. which is almost clear. 30% tint only allows 30% of Visible Light Transmitted. actually less, because there's a slight tint in the glass, from 5-10%. (my S60R had laminated glass, and rang the meter at 91% VTL without any tint.) SUVs are exempt for the windows behind the driver as they are classified as MPVs, same thing with minivans, etc.

depends on where you are and where you drive. in North Jersey *most* towns don't bother you (Clifton is a bitch, i know a kid that got 3 in a month). Most areas of Midtown they dont bother you, BK and Queens seem to be a bit worse.
that being said i've had tints on all my cars since 1999 and think i've only gotten one ticket. Pulled over a hand full of times in about 150k of driving in the tri-state area though and let off because of a PBA card. I still like the way it looks and think it's worth the minimal extra harassment. |

I would disagree. I feel like the cops in most areas of North Jersey (Morristown, Mendham, East Hanover, etc etc) are all ridiculous about tinting. I desperately want to get it done on my e92 but I'm scared because of all the tickets I got when I had my Sti. I had 18% tint all the way round (3M) and I got 3 tickets. I feel like just doing the back/rear windows looks a bit shitty to me- def not as clean. The last time I got pulled over, the ticket for tints on the front was $90 I believe and he threw another ticket "Tampering with Inspection" for good measure. That was $75. It's BS... but NJ doesn't mess when it comes to tint. Maybe I'll look at 50%....
