OK a bit over the top but, spurred on by the DIY for replacing the centre armrest in an E90, I decided to go for it on my E92. You can see how it's done here and it is fairly straightforward.

But, when you take the back trim off the coupe, you cannot see, or get at, the pins directly so does anyone know how much dismantling has to be done?

You don't need to remove that trim, lift the armrest and just remove the small cover near the hinge.

There was a picture somewhere I'll see if I can find it.

Biggest problem was the spring. As you can see in the first photo, the connecting bar between the springs is in a groove at the back which means it has to be bent away from you. With the two rods in place you can't bend it back over the lip at 6 o'clock (hour position). With the rods pulled out I nearly got the connecting bar in it's groove but this would have made sliding the rods in, darn near impossible. I noticed that on the E90 and E92 photos, there was no spring so I've ditched it. Seems to work O.K.

Having road tested it, the spring acts as a damper. The armrest stills locks in place vertically but gravity takes care of closing so it wouldn't hang by itself half open - but how often do you want it to anyway?

looks good, did you get the gear mechanism mentioned on that thread that lifts the rest slowly, or was that sacrificed by not using the spring?

No and no. See last post. But I will give it a try next time I want to hurt my fingers. If the non damping cheeses me off enough I will definitely give it a try but you have to understand that, car fixing ability wise, I am a klutz so I feel quite pleased with myself fitting the armrest and the Logic 7 tweeters.

Since you have been so resourceful so far, do you - or anyone else, know how to take the back seat squab off a coupe. I want to get to the underside of it to cut off an inconspicuous piece of leather for my next upgrade? I already asked the dealer if they had samples but got blank stares for my trouble.

sorry didn't mean to put you down, well done for getting it in. It was just that it looked quite easy from what he was saying. but what do I know I've not done it myself.

As for the leather, sorry can't help you.

P.S. if you want a home for the springs I'll look after it for you (if it would fit with a standard armrest)

The armrest came with a set of springs and there is a set on the car so you can have them if you want - but there didn't appear to be a gearwheel on the original so I'll have to keep the new one.

It surprisingly doesn't take a lot. Vacuum once a week and a quick blast of leather cleaner every month or so - seems to do the trick.

I've got TWO sets of springs, the set that was already on the car and the set that came with the new armrest. I only need one set.

The rear seat squab is individual for each set. Take hold of lower front base, lift and pull firmly. should come out in your hands.

Sorry for the hijack, but what is the purpose of the sliding armrest over the normal one?

I thought it was just for people with short arms?????

I can't reach the steering wheel with my left hand whilst leaving my elbow on the standard arm-rest - it is common with most cars - it irritates me, now I can.

Males typically drive with one hand on the wheel when cruising along, this allows you to rest your left hand on the wheel instead of on the gear knob, on your leg, on her leg ( no complaint there) when one's better half is in the passenger seat and it's quite relaxing whilst wafting along on a motorway cruise.

Also, it looks smarter in that it looks more padded (doesn't feel any different though), is slightly higher than the original and the leather finish doesn't look as rough as the rest of the leather.

Being a bit of a lazy bugger, I usually never put my left hand on the steering and only use it to change the auto-stick, so this option would be lost on me.
