MK8 Golf GTI

The MK7 is / was one of my favourite cars and I really want to like this as a potential future car to have in the family, hopefully it’ll grow on me but it’s not doing a great deal for me right now from what I’ve seen.

Maybe in the flesh it looks better and it seems to drive well but it doesn’t really hit the spot that the MK7 did

I had a 2014 GTi PP which, despite my wife's efforts at reshaping two of the wheels and the suspension at 2k miles, was one of my favourite cars of all time. I'm not fussed about the looks but if it drives well that wouldnt bother me...

The car above was one of my cheapest too - lost 4.5k over about 18 months, bought new. and spent nothing on it in the 9k miles owned it...

Having watched the video its clear that the Golf met my needs, and they suited its sweet spot. I did way too much long distance commuting but it also did some local commutes and country road thrashes. I dont want the pinnacle of cornering heaven as it could end up as hell as i enter a hedge backwards (memories of a 306GTi6) but I wanted an easy to live with hatch that could brighten my journey. I'd ay my RS4 is its more expensive brother. That is a compliment to me.

My Dad has a 7.5 GTi PP and it’s a great all-rounder. Suspect the Mk8 will be too but a few details that just
don’t work for me - those 18” alloys are naff,
IMHO and I know the integrated headrests would likely
mean the kids would complain about not being able to see out of the back, albeit optioning the sunroof would likely help with that. Also, does feel like it’s starting to get really quite pricey now.

I had a Mk 7.5 GTI which was a fantastic car. Just seem to do it was with sporty but classy looks, fast enough when you want it but also a very docile family car for pootling around town

The Mk 7.5 standard 18” wheels were terrible as are the Mk 8 so the 19” upgrade is an easy box to tick.

Build quality apparently not as good and their new too much on the touch screen rather than buttons and system rather slow to respond. Then there is the issue of whether the Audi or Seat versions at better quality/value point

Got to agree.

I had a Mark 6 GTI. This just doesn't seem to do it for me at all.

Sounds shite too....!

I drove a GTI 7.5 and have to say I expected more....it was mildly quick but sounded quite harsh when revved and so much road noise in the cabin - would get quite grating on longer journey.

Have to say I’m not sure what all the hype is about Golf GTI’s.....didn’t feel worth the money to me!

Love the Mk7.5 GTi.
I've seen the Mk8 standard version in the metal and it's not going to win any awards for its looks, front end and alloys in particular. It can probably be disguised to a degree in the right colour. The ones I've seen were undercoat grey and looked terrible. Maybe they'll improve it with the facelift in a few years time.
Drives well by all accounts but they've done very little to the 7.5's chassis and steering so it should do. I don't think you can have the GTi with a manual box though?

Keep seeing a new golf near home - can't get over the unibrow look. And touch sensitive interface buttons are just annoying.

Now I love the Golf and the GTI. I had a MK1,Mk3 ,Mk5,6 and 7...Including a R... But you have said the real issue...at 40k....its still a small hatchback at the end of the day...

Loved my mk6 gti.

The alloys on the mk8 in the video and photos above really don't do it for me. A poor effort.

Yes, can have a manual in the GTi still, but not in the R (or Clubsport I think).

The new Leon is really the same now inside. To the point all the reviews say the golf doesn't really have any usp bar the badge.
The new Leon looks better, is cheaper and has the same interior. Why would you get a golf bar the name.

I really like it including the 18" wheels, there is something timeless and classless about a GTI.

I think it looks atrocious. And the touch buttons inside would drive me insane. If I were in the market for this sort of car there would be many others ahead of it on the list.

Just been on the configurator and i am a bit disappointed as they seem to have replaced the vibrant (i think it was 'Mars' red) with some other less appealing hue
