Need help *CAR WONT START*
Hello everyone,
I'm having a rough saturday right now. my 2012 N55 motor 335i coupe isn't starting. The car has 100k miles on it for reference. it has had -New spark plugs (done 1 year ago) -New Alternator (Rebuilt with OEM parts professionally) -Had new starter put in 3 weeks ago. all electronics in the car are working perfectly fine but it wont crank. It makes a noise and keeps making it when I hold down Brake+Ignition Button. It's almost like a clicking noise video and pics for reference it just has "Service Engine Soon" on the dash and when I put it on a Zurich Code Reader I get no errors or anything. video for reference |

That’s your starter making the noise. It sounds like the starter gear is spinning but maybe it’s not grabbing the flex plate/flywheel. You’ll need to go back in and inspect it.
You could try hitting the starter solenoid to get the engine going again but make sure you drive it to the shop immediately after starting the car. To hit the starter, you’ll need to remove the drip tray above the engine and/or possibly remove the airbox. Not too familiar with n55, basing this on my previous n54 knowledge. |

it may be worth taking the drive belt off and seeing if it spins.
I've had seized accesories stop a motor from turning over. It may also be worth putting a meter on the jumper points and watching the voltage when the starter engages. if it dips significatly the starter is engaging and trying to spin the motor and the amp draw is pulling down the voltage because it's stuck. and do a once over on all the primary cables/grounds. |

Before you take stuff apart take a long screwdriver and put it on the starter and the other end on your ear. Have someone try and start the car. You should be able to tell if the starter is just spinning and the selenoid is not kicking in. If so you need another starter. The shop should be able to warranty it. Try and get a new Bosch one. Not a rebuilt one. Just put one in mine and it's awesome. I have used Bosch new starters many times with no issues.

Sure sounds like the starter itself is not functioning properly to me. Wherever you had the starter put in should likely replace it, but I would ensure they are using either the OE or OEM starter from a quality supplier like FCP Euro or similar.
Another option is to have the starter rebuilt locally buy a reputable electronics rebuilder which can be cheaper and last a long time as long as they use quality brushes/parts. Save yourself a ton of time and make sure your mechanic is not using junk Auotzone or Oreilly parts. |

Voltages? Battery status? Can you jump start it?
If you have jumper cables, you can see if you have a ground strap issue here by jumping together the chassis ground to the engine engine block: Follow 2:16 and 5:06 |
