2021 X3 M40i BlendMount and MirrorTap radar detector experience
I've received a couple comments and PMs about this from a different thread so I thought maybe I should summarize all my feedback on one post so others can find it more easily with the search.
I ordered the following:
1) What mirror do you have? My X3 M40i has the Drivers Assistance Pro and the M40i trim level includes the automatic high beam which can both influence what mirror housing your X3 has. So check which mirror you have against the BlendMount Quick Fit Guide: https://blendmount.com/quick_fit_guide In my case, this was my mirror style: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=51_7677 And the "BMW-016 | 2018 Series" was the matching BlendMount mirror: https://blendmount.com/vehiclemirrorid/bmw/bmw016 2) Where did you get power? The MirrorTap includes a nice walk through of how to find the proper power source using a Multimeter / Voltmeter so please follow that piece of paper incase your setup is different than mine. But mine matched the great post https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showp...75&postcount=7 from Mdog97 This power source is switched but will remain on for about 6 minutes after turning off the car. I was able to have the radar detector in the "AutoPower Off" setting and let the car power up and power down the radar detector without worrying about the auto power off after N hours feature. But you could always leave it enabled and power cycle your detector if it turns off.
I'll post a picture of the final results later today once it is done raining / snowing. Last edited by MidwestCarFan; 10-18-2020 at 10:36 AM.. |

Holy Toledo!
I have the exact same detector and paid $15 for my mount. It is plastic though. Search my name and you will see pics. I have to ask...why did you go with such an expensive one? I am not being critical of your purchase, I am curious. Edit: here is mine. Umm...never mind my question. Mine looks like an erector set, yours like a German sculpture. Rock on! https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showt...ht=Jeepersjoey Paul

LOL....save money, save time and maybe even save a life......just don't speed! Keep it at 5 mph to 10 mph over the limit and you won't get ticketed, and maybe even arrive a couple minutes early.
Not wanting to sound "preachy" but how fast does one really need to go? Speeding saves remarkably little time. |

Speed also means $$$ for some local governments, and you can get ticketed at 10mph over even if you are in a pack cruising along at that speed. Police can pick a car to ticket and you could be the unlucky one. Happened to me when I was driving a red E39 and I actually had a dialogue with the officer: "Q: Did I get ticketed because I'm driving a red BMW? A: No, you were at the back of the pack easier to get a read on." Speeding tickets will cost $$ and insurance will go up too, even if you are far from reckless. Better to have some warning and since then I've had detectors, and btw I am far from a reckless kid who is drag racing. I'm a conservative driving 76 year old. Conservative means I keep up with traffic but don't bob and weave and try to gain 5 minutes.
