Can keys be re-programmed to work with other cars?

Is it possible to take a key from donor G30, and have a dealer re-program it to work with another G30? Of course the physical key won't fit the locks, but would comfort access and other features work? It's ~$600 for a replacement key from BMW, but I'm told I'd then have to bring the car into the dealer for an hour to sync the key with the car's computer at an additional $175. So if I can get a G30 key from elsewhere and pay the $175 for the dealer to program, would that be all I would need?
