Moving to North Carolina
Anyone in the Raleigh/Durham area?
I am looking to transfer to UNC or NCSU. Are there any other schools I should consider for business-marketing? I don't want to spend any more than $20k a year in tuition out-of-state. Hopefully I will be in-state after a year and can get the discounted tuition, but it may be two years. I'm going to get my associate's so that I won't have to worry about transferring credits. I don't think I can transfer into any school for this Fall since the deadlines have already past and UNC won't let you transfer in during the spring, so I'm looking at entry-level marketing/sales jobs for a year. I can get some experience and then I'll probably be able to file for in-state tuition. I think it will be nice to take a year off, and I'm really looking forward to the change of scenery. The traffic, people, and prices down here are not working for me right now and it will be great to meet some people that are more relaxed and courteous and be able to actually drive my car and buy a house. 2/1 condos down here are no less than $250k. I'm looking at houses in Cary/Apex for between $150k-$250k and finding tons of great choices. Most of them are 3/2 with .2-.5 acres and were built within the past 10 years. So any info on the area from current or past residents is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Your movin' to North Cackalay eh? Well if your planning on going to UNC your better off moving to Raleigh and commuting to class. Cary and Chapel Hill are both stupid expensive. I live just south of Cary and paid $150k for my little house. Renting/leasing in Raleigh is quite a bit less than in Cary too. I'm planning on Grad school next year at UNC Chapel Hill.

Don't tell me stupid expensive, lol. I'm paying $1200 a month for a 1/1 apartment and I found 2/2 apartments in Cary for $800. I found beautiful houses on realtor.com in Cary for under $250k. If I post them will you tell me if they're good locations? Also as far as commuting, it says that UNC is about 25 minutes from Cary and right now I commute 2 miles and it takes me 15-30 minutes.

a lil sidetracked but you guy've got it good. Houses here are freaking expensive. Condos around here are in the $350-450k range. The cheapest house here is around $359k. I dont know what the job availability is over in FL but it's freakin expensive to live here.

Well as far as commuting from Cary/Raleigh - it's really not that bad here. It would probably take you about 30 mins once you get the short cuts down. $1200 a month for rent in a 1/1?!?! I guess stupid expensive isn't the right word then... those sound like Washington DC prices! The neighborhoods around Cary are pretty nice so you go as high as the millions and as low as the high $100k's. $250k sounds about right for a decent house. The scene up here is pretty good too if your into music and pubs/bars/clubs. Ever heard of Bonnaroo? Also the ocean is about 2hrs east (ahhh... the outer banks) and the mountains about 3 hrs west (Blue Ridge Parkway... fun road to drive the bimmer with!!) When are you guys planning to come up?

and these are some nice ones I would consider in Cary, NC for $260k The problem down here is not only is housing very expensive, wages are very low, mainly due to the large number of illegal immigrants in South Florida. My dad was looking at jobs in his area-Vero Beach, FL- and they were offering him half of what he could get in Raleigh, NC.

Thats a huge difference in cost of living. I hope it all works out for you.
This topic got me wondering on what type of home you would get for a similar price in NYC. I was originally looking for a place in Brooklyn and finally decided to just move to NJ. But here is an example of Brooklyn real estate: This place is selling for $261,000 in Brownsville (one of the worst neighborhoods in Brooklyn) . The property is being sold "as is". Notice the proximity of the elevated train and the boarded up windows.

I figured that if housing is cheap, then jobs are scarce too. I've always thought FL is filled with jobs though. I had no idea why wages are so low over there, until now. We have a city called Sacramento over here and they dont have a lot of jobs there. IT's mostly farm land. Yet houses there are $350k +. I guess there's more to these stuff than I thought. |

I live in Durham and am considering UNC Grad school as well. I would not recommend doing the commute to elsewhere. Find a nice place in Chapel Hill maybe even a nice apartement close to Franklin street. The Warehouse off Rosemary is great. Check it out. Plus nightlife in CH is awesome and u dont want to drink and drive around there.....

Cities like Modesto have many houses in that range. But you're right about Fremont. Houses there are pretty darn expensive. |

i have one question. where do you want to use your degree or is that not known. sometimes a degree or type of degree from certain schools are more marketable than others over a larger geographical area. then it holds less weight as you get more years in the corporate world and/or got a grad. degree from some other school, or the more connections you have w/ people in the right places in corporate america.
