Machine Aluminum Rims not suitable for winter?

Hey guys,

I just got this email from my tire/wheel supplier:

The wheels aren’t approved for winter use due to their finish.
Any wheels that are machined or chrome aren’t winter approved.
The snow, salt and calcium on our roads can cause green rust (corroded look) and will eat away at the paint.

If the wheels are used during winter, it will void the limited warranty.

If you choose to use the wheels, please note that the wheels will require additional maintenance to keep them clean and in good condition. If you do not drive often during winter, you might be able to get away with it but we do not recommend the use of chrome or machined wheels during the winter season.

Is it okay to proceed with the order? Or should I look for regular alloy or steel rims?

This came from PMCTire - a reputable wheel and rim supplier here in Canada. Not from BMW themselves. That said, I've been researching and it seems that what they say is true. I'm confused whether I should go for the wheels or not.

I re-read the thread a couple times..... and I see what they are saying..... that the chrome won't hold up to a winter environment.

The chrome mag wheels on my 1984 Olds Cutlass held up for nearly 20 years before the chrome started to fade. The chrome bumpers on my last 1972 Porsche 914 held up for over 40 years and still looked great. The chrome "everything" on my 02 Heritage Springer held up for 15 years, and was still magazine quality.

That sounds like an ULTRA cheap chrome, if they can't even warrantee it for a couple years, and they deny warranties because you "drove them in the winter"???

I've sent quite a few parts from various restorations out to be chromed in the past.... and if it's done properly, chrome will outlast the car it's on. If not, it will start flaking or turn yellow before it ever even makes it to you in the mail.

Reputable or not..... this sounds shady, that the company has that little faith in their finish. Hopefully they are inexpensive.
