BMW simply must be aware that their...
driver-assistance software sucks! Since introduced, the lane-keeping function, for example, has been near useless — just ping-ponging between the lanes, and often losing sight of the lane markings altogether. And yes, it’s calibrated in my car. Why can’t they periodically generate software updates, a la Tesla, to constantly improve these systems?

Maybe they updated this slightly in MY2020? We got shafted so I am not sure they actually updated much. But this feature works well for me and I use it frequently in stop and go traffic.
The other thing that I figured out that makes this all work better is using “resume” on the steering wheel with ACC to get around the need to hit the gas in traffic jams. You can even do this early (meaning you can hit resume once it drops out after stopping for a few seconds) and it will get back at it. This trick has made me really fall in love with ACC + Auto steering. |

Yeh lane assistant is not perfect. I use it a lot here in the U.K. but agree it could be better. Maybe it is improved in the LCI?
Always maintained that traffic jam assist is the better half of the system and arguably actually more useful. |

I think that the time at will take off from standstill is far longer in trafffic if the road markings are clear, if they’re not then you need to hit resume much earlier. I noticed this when in a jam on a dual carriageway compared to traffic in town. Am I imagining this ?

I've never managed to totally work out the algorithm they use. In general the faster you go the shorter the time for the prompt to put your hands on the wheel.
I think yeh if the road markings are detected that time may be longer. I think there is more to it though as sometimes I'm prompted when I think it would have left it for a bit more time and others when it's driven on its own for quite sometime. In my experience the longest times seem to be at slower speeds on the motorway when both lanes and a car in front are identified. |

I use active cruise all the time. I need to change the default to 2 bars since 3-4 allow way too much gap in traffic. Once I'm in stop & go, I'll drop it to 1 bar. The challenge is switching to a car with standard cruise, I have to re-learn tapping the brake when catching traffic.
I agree lane keep assist leaves a lot to be desired but I use it for short periods if needing to attend to something such a blowing my nose or unwrapping a cough drop (constant allergies ) It works moderately well on most NC roads but I wonder if a cop would think I'm drunk. I have played with it in non-optimal conditions of weather and lane markings but would never trust it. It gauges that itself but in marginal conditions, it may show green for a moment and then go red..... It also isn't smooth at all when the roads become really twisty. I have learned you can delay re-touching the wheel throughout the yellow warning until it goes red giving you noticeable extra time.

It's no where near Tesla that's put that way, suppose it has improved in i7, I use it infrequently, if it's a stable highway or traffic I use it, though the amount distance it left is just about perfect for people to cut you off (which if I'm on semi auto pilot I guess I'm fine...)

I just received a 2021 5 Series with Drivers Assistance and on two trips so far, it did a great job driving and changing lanes. I thought it was very comparable to the Tesla I rented a couple months ago. I was surprised it would switch lanes too. I used it in a rainstorm and it performed great, where the Tesla I rented stopped autopilot when driving in a rainstorm. I have not gotten to try it in a traffic jam or below 40 where I think it is total self driving. Over 40, I do wish it would allow more than 8 seconds with your hands not touching the steering wheel. I know the Tesla is longer than that. BMW has done a great job on updating it. Last edited by DBV1; 09-02-2020 at 03:48 PM.. |

My "non LCI" can switch lanes by itself too (when using the blinker stalk of course), so that´s not a new feature.

I had a 2020 X5 service loaner for a week, and kept trying to use that lane keeping thing and I thought it sucked. I test drove an M8 a few months ago, and it also had the "feature" and it sucked just as badly.

Definitely not my experience so far on my 2021 5 Series. Hope it keeps working this shell. Like I said before, it is possible they improved something on the 2021’s.

Driving Assistance Professional in the LCI has an eye monitor which tracks whether you are looking ahead or not. If you are, then it will re-start after a much longer stop compared to the previous version - Assistance Plus. With the monitor fitted it will enable BMW to also increase the time you can take your hands off when the law allows - here in the UK they are relaxing the law for autonomous driving next year so I think BMW will then issue an OTA update which changes the autonomous time.

So lane assist is not worth "retrofitting"? In Denmark/Germany the driving assistent doesn't include the lane assist but all the hardware. And I am looking into the possibilities for coding this option.
Reading this doesn't help the motivation |

Lane assist seems to be working well on my new 2021.

So far, I think that the assistance functions on my 2021 M550 are improved over my 2018 M550. The auto lane changing feature is new, that wasn't on my 2018, and it works very well. I think the car stays centered in the lane better now, it seems smoother rather than the abrupt moves that the 2018 would make.
