No ding allowance on lease return?

40 years and 14 BMW’s And never have I been asked to pay excess wear and use charges.

A month ago I turned in X6 M and leased a 2020 X6 M50i. Now I get a bill from BMW for excess wear & use charges to the tune of $5890.

They padded excess mileage by 10,000 Miles
Charging $300 x 4 for tires.
$1000 for 4 dings

What’s up with this, is this the new normal? You not allowed to have small dings any longer?

This has happened to a few friends of mine, (not just BMW dealers either) hence why I never lease....

Being said make sure to review your contract, I know BMW is very good at clarifying what is gets charged.

What do you mean padded excess mileage. It's from my understanding you pay per x miles over what terms you signed for.

Didn't they perform a lease return inspection prior? In the past I was always told that anything smaller than your fist is ok on a lease return. Wondering if they changed something. As for being over mileage that shouldn't be a surprise since there is a direct calculation of cost per mile over that you could do.

The tire fee seems reasonable on an x6m, and to be expected if your tread was below a certain depth. The mileage of course is expected too. So it’s really just down to the dings. Dings over 2” are chargeable. The maximum charge is $250 per panel so you must have had multiple dings on 4 panels. In my experience they do measure the dings and you do have to pay. Tire tread, curb rash and dings over 2” are the things you’ll have to pay for.

No multiple dings per panel and nothing larger than 2”, maybe 1”, if that.

Mileage was 1570 over, I’m being charged for 10570, big difference, likely just a mistake.

Front tire thread was kind of low but on my previous return was also low and was not charged.

Didn’t have a lease return inspection, returned 2 months early. Since dealer didn’t say anything upon return, assumed all is well.

Gonna have to put up a fight, will see what happens.

I always buy the damage and wear waiver on leases. It's worth it for the tires and brakes alone. Audi uses a third-party inspector for lease returns and they're sticklers. My S7, which was in pristine condition, had a tiny chip in the windshield and four almost bald tires. The invoice was $1,900 for the tires and windshield, which I paid nothing because of the waiver. The waiver cost me $1,500 so I netted $400.

I got the waiver on my BMW as well. I believe it also adds an excess mileage waiver, at least I know the Audi one did. It would be worth it for the tires alone assuming I can safely ride the 22" OEM tires to lease end. I know these tires are expensive.

I just signed the paperwork on my M50i and ended up buying their "Triple Play" pack which includes Windshield repair/replacement, Wheel/Tire (including cosmetic) and Paintless Dent Repair, all for $1342 (which I thought was a decent deal), so am putting on my calendar 2 years and 10 months out to order all 3 services (windshield and PDR are done mobile) prior to my lease return. Should be good at that point. I HATE surprises like this. Oh yeah, my tire plan is to take off the RFTs and replace with Goodyear Exhilarates (45k treadwear warranty), then when those wear out, put the OEM tires back on and drive the remainder of my lease, effectively returning with "new" tires.

My last lease was a Lincoln and on lease return they had a credit card sized "gauge" that they used. If the card covered the "issue" it wasn't and issue and there was no charge.

That's not bad. I paid slightly more for the waiver, which covers everything including brakes, interior wear and tear and missing parts, and you don't have to "fix" anything before turning it back in.

The only drawback to the waiver is if I damage a wheel prior to lease turn in (and can't drive as a result of that damage), I would have to pay for the repair myself (or file an insurance claim). There's certainly benefits and drawbacks to either route, but both pretty much achieves the same thing to a certain extent.

The inspection prior to return is key now with BMW. They have definitely changed over the last few years and gotten way more strict. On my son's 340 we had to do some clean up work, but the tires were cheaper from BMW than anywhere else so I let them handle that one.

This is our first lease. I will be changing the insurer very soon and I am wondering whether it makes sense to fix the two dings before the switch. From I am hearing such dings should be acceptable. Is this correct?

I will also have two rear tires to be replaced, but I am planning to buy used tires (same model), $200-300 installed for two.

A separate question - can I turn in the car to any dealership or I need to do this with the one I leased through?

Thanks!

Added the excess wear and tear insurance on our X5. Added ~$25 per month to the lease payment. Covers for I believe $7,000 in damage. Can turn in with bald tires or even a front bumper hanging off and we won't be charged a dime (unless cost to repair exceeds $7,000). Figured it could well pay for itself at lease end. Provides great peace of mind.

BMW has an acceptable ding/blemish size per the BMW lease agreement. I found this online, it’s towards the end. http://www.motorologist.com/wp-conte...ochure_Eng.pdf

The first one looks fine, the second one, though, will be billed for repair per the lease return guidelines.

Keep in mind that sometimes it’s cheaper to just let BMW invoice you for the repair. You can probably google that amount and then get a repair estimate and see which one is cheaper. It’s also more convenient to just let BMW do it.

I think you can turn it in to any dealership. You may need to call and schedule the appointment, but most BMW dealers are happy to do the inspection and sign off on the chance you’ll lease another from them. Call to confirm, but don’t mention you didn’t buy it from them, just ask for a lease return appointment.

I can pretty much guarantee you a front bumper hanging of a G05 will cost more than 7K in repairs. You would be shocked at the repair costs for this vehicle. (Example - each Laser headlight assembly around $4000, & that's parts only not labor )
