Limp Mode, only code is 5e18. help please

Hi guys,
I've been having an issue with my 07 328. The car is basically fbo. I get a 5e18 code and limp mode during half throttle acceleration. At around 50% throttle , I watch the ess max out (open fully) which is being commanded, during this instance the timing pulls to about 0 to -5 and I get massive power loss. Limp mode and 5e18 happen randomly. This only happens 2100ish rpm and up .The ess and valvetronic motor have both been replaced and test good. I have smoke tested the intake and the exhaust and confirmed no leaks. If I disconnect the maf it runs perfect. Again I get NO other codes. Any input on where to look or if anyone has had a similar issue?
thanks

So with the MAF off it runs good? Have you tried a replacement or used working one?

Another question, why would the dme request the valvetronic fully open at half throttle? Or is this normal?
