I've been reading a lot of these posts and I think I know what I need, but couldn't decide my mind.
I ordered M50i (no VIN yet so I can still make modifications) and I originally put 21 in 741M, but couple days later changed my mind to 20 in 740M and below are the pros and cons that I think about these two wheels.. my mind tells me 21 but reality and practicality goes to 20. I'm outside the states so tires option are limited for me. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

21
Pros
-Looks better than 20 740M
-More traction on corners

Cons
-Staggered, so more tire changes than 20 in
-Limited tire options for 315-35-21. I only see michelin and p zero and i heard mixed reviews about p zero

20
Pros
-longer lifespan than 21
-lots of options for tires

Cons
-looks (from both side and rear)
-decreased top speed (from 155 to 130)

Neither. Go with 22's as they complement the car best.

22s please. I like them so much I bought a second set for winter.

21s are run flats and have limited tire choices

20s look rather small and roundish. May be a good winter option, but otherwise a regrettable choice.

What tires did you buy for the winter?

I chose 20's for our M50i for the following reasons:

1) Immediately replacing whatever tires come with my current favorite tire, Goodyear Exhilerates. Have them on BRZ and GTI and they are amazing. Will store Run Flats and replace close to lease return.

2) This is my wifes primary vehicle, and she wants as plush/comfy as possible, so 20's with Air Suspension. She will use the acceleration for passing, but will not be screaming through corners nor going anywhere near 130 top speed.

3) We live in Atlanta, so only need "winterish" tires for holiday road trip to Illinois for Thanksgiving and Christmas/NY. We deal with snow on those trips about 2 times every 10 years.

All that said, the 22's are BEAUTIFUL, and if it were my main drive, I would definitely have 22's (and DHP instead of AS)

IMO, the question for a M50i isn't a 20 or 21 but 21 or 22.

I have 21's on mine. It came with Hannook Summer. I had the same 21's on my X5 40i and yes winter or All season are rare finds. If you want dedicated winters, start looking no. Nokia makes a limited run for the 315's.

If you ordered the 2 axle air suspension, the 22's will be fine. Not sure of the roads in and around Atlanta but I have a feeling they are much better than the potholes in the Northeast.

Also, there are plenty of OEM 20's you can buy for a winter set up.

I personally think if you put on the expensive suit, wear the right shoes to match.

I'm in Korea and all season is fine here and not too bad potholes. That was the biggest factor, not having all season tires. I do realize 20s just doesn't look right. Are you getting winters also or looking for all season?

20s and 22s are easiest to find tires for. 21s are much more difficult..... but not "impossible".

I actually like the design of the 21s the best..... comprimise on comfort (compared to 22).... but still maintains the width, top speed, and appearance (compared to 20s).

Unless you live in a REALLY..... REALLY bad area for roads, 22s will be fine, especially if you have air suspension.

I do.... and got 21s for the reasons listed above.

And now.... I have a set of 22s being made and shipped,.because even with bad roads, 22s are fine with a bit of caution.

Still limited options for 22s and cost 1K for a set compared to 20s.. Not sure if it's worth it to upgrade and since I'll need to switch them out more often for 22s.

My apologies on the location mix up. it was another member that lived in Atlanta.

I am going to go with a set of dedicated winters with the same size set up. I know others may disagree but I'm the one buy and driving. I like the look of the wider tires. I wish the rear rims were 11" wide, like the F15 20's.

I had decided winters last season for the X3M and zero acceleration reduction.

That being said, I ran all seasons on my F15 50i, Continental DWS 06 Extreme. Never had an issue in the worst snow storm. $1,200 a set mounted and balanced. I went through 3 sets.

Can't wait to see your 22"s. Did you opt to have the width increased in the rear?

Oh yea. 22x10.5 front with 295/30/22..... and 22x12 in the rear with 335/25/22. Coupled with a moderate 1-inch drop of the suspension.... and she's going to look like a beast.

Took 2 months to build, and they should be arriving (here in Europe) in the next couple weeks.

I'm interested, but don't know much about offsets. My 740 is 9.0 so how does that work for 742?

I was joking
Those aren't your offsets btw, but the width I think you're referring to

This going to look amazing. I have been watching your build thread.

Just putting together my build list now. Trying to get that front splitter shipped to the states. Actually think I have it all set...should know very soon.

No doubt! But quite a trip from NY to pu. I'm not interested in shipping these bad boys...however would make for a nice trip to PA to check out the Amish!!
