How common is a faint transmission whine? When the car is at 1-2.5k RPM you can hear a very faint whine. Not the timing chain. 2016 with 45k miles.

I'm getting the same noise, really annoying. 2012 328i n20 with 75000kms. I'm guessing its going to be an expensive fix.

I'm still under warranty for 2 years. Hoping it doesn't get any worse. I think it's normal but you can never be sure with these cars....

Do you have anything in the cig lighters? I'd get a whine with my 6MT n20 with certain phone chargers. Take them out I don't hear interference anymore. Thoughts?

Nooooo not even close to that bad. I think it's just me being paranoid and hearing things 😅 similar to how I thought the "N20 Clank" was an issue but it wasn't. It's just how they sound.

this sound is turbo... I am telling you because I have heard it in several cars that have broken turbo, and that is that the turbine or is rubbing the bearing has worn out and will cause damage to the turbine

In my case, I thought it was the transmission as I had a whine. Turned out to be the A/C compressor, was replaced under warranty and noise went away. never had issues with cold air, just the whine.
