This is well known. The common cause of this is oil leaking onto the belt/tensioner from the oil filter housing gasket.

I had no leaks. And the tensioner was ~70K old. Bearing failed on the tensioner and belt went to shit, but a 3 inch section got between the harmonic and the engine pushing the seal in. I took it all apart and found it. It appears that no belt went into the engine. Car had 130K. It was time for an oil pan gasket and new engine mounts.

I caught it early enough, so just a new few things and back to normal.

if you have a leak, replace your gasket.

if substantial oil contaminated your belt, replace the belt.

if you have excessive movement of the tensioner, then replace the tensioner.

I had neither. Bearing just failed.

I would also like to see a video of how your belt/tensioner/crank pulley look after replacement. I brought my car in for BMW to look at this (see video and post here of the 'before' https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...1487648&page=3) and they said they replaced the idler pulley. Afterwards, it looks exactly the same as the video there. However, i have seen other videos where the 'after' looks rock solid.
