Honda Fit

I want one so bad. We have two dogs and a cat and since my boyfriend got the MR-2 we have to take them in my car and I get all paranoid about them messing up my car, plus it's a pain to fold down the rear seats (don't know why I had to pay for that option but it was worth it).

So what do you guys think of a Honda Fit with a motor swap and a suspension, could it be the perfect fun-to-drive practical car?

$15,720

That reminds me of a Toyota Matrix.

well then what practical dog-friendly car would you suggest? i don't like the styling of a lot of other cars in the segment, only the Honda Fit and I am a Honda person in general.

ooohhh...I've been following up on the Fit as a possible replacement for my reliable but aging 99 Civic (still going strong with less than 75k on the clock). Initial reviews seem to confirm the pre-launch buzz under way for the Fit. Great handling and good quality along with inventive interior packaging. I hear there are already waiting lists for the first batch and not much room (yet) for much negotiations...this is definitely the pick of the sub-compact bunch. I also anticipate a whole slew of tasty aftermarket parts from Mugen and Modelo for e.g.

From what I have read it has go-kart-like handling and is not that slow. 0-60 in 8 secs. It prob feels faster being in such a small, lightweight car.

I really like it too.

A hybrid version is comming out for 2007/8.

I don't like the looks. Nikki, I would get an e36 318i for cheaper and use that for the dogs. It would be fairly economical and very fun to drive.

vladinecko: it's actually pretty good...very nippy. If I were looking for a new car in that price range, the Fit will be high on the list....

Well I like the new Golf (Rabbit) but it's a VW and I don't tust it. Plus it's a little more expensive and I don't like the styling as much.

come to think to it, looks weird, kinda like the lunch box Scion!
the front is ok until i saw the back, I may consider Civic over that!
.. but then again who cares if it gets million miles per gallon and its a commuting car
Horray!
.. but then again a tough pill to swallow coming from a e90
Who cares!
... but then again...

Oh come on, how much are you really going to drive the Fit? In my experience, reliability correlates not with age, but with miles driven. If I had a "dog" car, it would maybe get two thousand miles a year, and I am sure you could find a reliable e36 and maintain it for a reasonable price.

Depends on the dogs, I guess. And the dogs would love a vert in Florida.

Well we go on a lot of trips with the dogs so we need to be able to fit their cages in the back. They're 7lbs and 19lbs and their cages juuuust fit in the e90 with the seats folded down. I really need a wagon/hatch for them.

No, the exterior styling reminds me of a Toyota Matrix, and this is not a bad thing. I like the Matrix. Look at the following pictures.

Btw, if I needed a dog "car," I would consider a Honda Element. You can just hose down the interior with water to clean off the dirt and dog hair.

The current (May 2006) issue of Car and Driver compared the FIT to 6 other vehichles in this class.

Verdict? "It debuts at C/D in typical Honda show-off fashion, winning by 25 points - a cakewalk"

The Matrix was not tested, it was a bit above the price limit for the test.

I love it, we're looking at a K20 swap (RSX Type-S motor) that produces 200hp for like $4k.
