Question Vacuum hose

Hi guys,
Could someone please let me know what is the use of the vacuum hose hook to the air filter housing ?
I did a service at BMW dealer and today I found that they forgot to plug it in.
I am pretty sure because I did my oil change just right before that and there is no chance of this getting lose after just few days.
Have a nice day.

Sorry guys, i forgot to upload the pic.
My concern is: i have done approx 500 miles since the service was done. I am not sure if it could create any problem if the hose is not connected to the air filter, probably dirty air come to crankshaft.
