Dodgy Turbo on 320d (177)?
My mate has just had his turbo and injectors replaced on his 57 plate 320d coupe (he does a lot of miles, so its already 60k+). He rekons all the 320ds in his companies fleet have the same problem! Either
1. He's exaggerating (wouldn't be the first time) and its just him being unluky. 2. The rest of his company drives as hard as he does and brought it upon theirselves. 3. There is a genuine problem and its only a matter of time until mine goes. Any one had any similar failures or heard any rumours?

Well, there seems to be a lot of problems with the "new" engine (177 hp efficient dynamics). There´s a thread about it at a Swedish forum and both 2 litres diesel drivers and 2 litres petrol are having problems. Mostly they have problems with a jerky engine....especially in lower rpms. Some have had their turbos replaces or other hardware. For those who the hardware change didnt solved the problem, BMW upgrades the software but often it wont help anyway. I know that BMW should have released a new software in August for the 177hp engine but I havn´t called them and checked it out.
I also have problems with mine. It started when the car had reached around 10000 km. It only occurs at low rpms (below 2000) and only when applying mild throttle. It seems to have become a little better now when its cold outside. Im going in for regular service in about 5000 km and I´m gonna ask them to have a look at it.

Mine hasn't blown up yet, but I haven't done 5k miles yet, lol. Surely the 177ps engine has at least 12 months warranty left for everyone which should be some comfort.

Correct, but its still a pain in the arse getting it sorted. My mate now reckons his is running worse than it was before, so its booked in again!
Touch wood, I've got no problems at the moment - just wasn't expecting this from a BMW!

i have the E92 177bkp too, N47 engine. Pull off the plastic cover on top of the engine and see if you have the throttle valve (should be on all E92 320d's). It's on the end of the plumbing from intercooler to engine, and you can clearly see the shaft with a spring on the outside.
This thing has its own life, and does not neccessarely follow the throttle. I definitely felt too slow responses on throttle changes while cornering. What it does is killing boost pressure. Or more scientificly it creates a lower pressure behind the valve when partially closed, and thus allow a higher EGR (exhaust gas regeneration) flow. Look for Pierburg EGR on Google and you'lll find pictures of components under the hood. Also info in that it should command EGR up to 3000 rpm and/or 60% load (thus you're better of with a 320d than a 330d unless you consistently floor the throttle, as 60% load on a 320d is 40% on a 330d?) And 60% load on 320d is already exceeding legal speed limits. The valve also assist in DPF (diesel particulate filter) regeneration when you drive too much in areas where you should be using a push bike anyway And while I'm at it, these engines have CCV (closed crankshaft ventiliation). It is the short hose coming from the front of the engine going into the plumbing to the turbo. CCV is great from a ecology point of view, but with a bit of a clogged air filter it will start sucking oil out of the engine, which will burn without any problem, but with EGR forms a nice mess in the intake manifold If you want to see what combined EGR and CCV does, pull of the hose from intercooler of the engine goining into the throttle valve (slide a screwdriver into the clip from the back, and while pushing in the tube lift the clip. The tube then comes off. If you try to push in the screwdriver from the front it won't work very well). Valve could be closed, but you should be able to rotate it manuallly. If not just insert the FOB key and try again. Use your fingers to feel the back side of the plate, and wall, and you'll know what I mean. So message 1 is clean your airfilter yourselves regularly. PS If you have an E46 320d (I've had two) it has no CCV but cleaning the airfilter, although a royal pain in the butt, is well worth it. Do it once and you'll know why. The guy who designed this filter system has probably been fired.. Message 2 is reading in between the lines, cheers, |

I have too experienced a mild hesitancy and subtle 'kick' when accelerating, but given that I've had this on the Golf TDi I wasn't too bothered.
Having said that I think I'll poke me neb under the bonnet and take a peek at the air filter, although the car only done 6k so doubt it'll be clogged up.

blown turbo on 177bhp 320d
Mine blew this morning on journey to England. Checks were ok, oil and fuel were correct. Driving about yesterday, no indication but this morning i had no power on accelerating from lights and then a yellow engine malfunction light came on whilst on Motorway. FFS!!! unfortunately i had to wait an hour to get picked up then another half hour til garage opened then an hour to be told what problem was. Now i'm waiting to hear when i can pick car up!!!
ps the car is a 2008 58plate 320d with only 7400 miles on the clock |

This is indeed very concerning with such young cars.

Had lost power this morning yellow engine malfunction light came (half coloured in) turbo link rod was seized resulting in lower boost managed to limp to work. The BMW emergency service (who's service might I add was 2nd to none) freed it but recommended booking it into the garage to be replaced. Apparently BMW have a newer version which they are replacing it with
Monday its going in. Watch this space!!!!!

Mine 320 LCI just crossed 1200miles and right now is fine, if anytning its running a lot better than when pickedup,
While the turbo clutter is more noticiable the power is better and you can certainly hear the tubro a lot more , as if the ECU throttles back the car below 1000 miles. . But I do agreee cleaning the air filter at least eevery 10k is a must far easier that in e46 that was a nighmare when I had it. I suppose having moder tech is always a risk and price we pay

I have heard the life of fuel injectors 'on any diesel' is around 60K miles. Certainly, my wifes car a Volvo V70 D5 SE (52 plate) with only 63K miles on, earlier this year failed to start in the colder weather. Was a serious 'leak back' on two fuel injectors which I was quoted £1000 by Volvo to fix (this was to replace two of five injectors).
I took it to a diesel fuel injector specialist (Doctor Diesel) who fixed it for around £650. He told me the Bosch injector have only a finite lifespan given the extreme pressures they are operating under. His opinion that modern common rail turbo diesels are not as reliable as the derv burners of old largely for this reason. I have been using premium diesel in the hope it will keep my injectors in better health since (on both my BM and my wifes Volvo). Fingers crossed, fuel injector replacement may cost me more than the savings on fuel! |
