Borla VS Remus VS Milltek catbacks

I don't want to have to do this twice. I'm looking at the Borla, Remus and Milltek catbacks. In order of loudness where would they compare? Sorry forum bro's, I'm only interested in opinions of those who have heard all three or at least two of them. "Remus is louder than xxx." Or "Milltek has a much better tone than xxx." Honestly I'm leaning toward a Borla setup and adding a resonator if it's too harsh.

Good luck finding someone who has heard more than one of these in person, considering they're some of the less common choices of exhaust for these cars. You're not going to get anything more than conjecture here my friend.

Any reason you're not considering some of the more common options like AWE, MPE, Active etc?

I would just play rock paper scissors.... just pick one... they all good.

I heard of the Remus and Milltek in person... Remus is milder than the two and Remus is quieter than my AWE. So I would say Milltek as loud.... they sound quite different.

But when you start adding burbles then they get to sound the same. All the gunshot and burble sound the same to me.

NOTE: all exhaust I heard are all with a stock dp. Don't ask me how they sound with a catless dp.

I don't like the active, MPE is nice but too quiet and I don't want to do a DP.

Thanks mate! You're the second person who mentioned the AWE. So very expensive. I guess I could start with just the axle back and then add the mid pipe if I wanted more sound. I wonder if they will sell me an n20 backbox with the finishers for the 335?? Anyone know about this?

lol I stand corrected, I guess you will find someone who has heard more than one in person!

the awe midpipe changes the tone of the exhaust... not louder.

I think one person who has ordered the exhaust with dual exit (335i) but for an n20 application but that person is not on the forum. If your leaning to awe then call them directly or call Mike@x-ph.

@mike@x-ph.com I knew you were going to promote Remus! Ac tually it's the reason I'm considering it. I really am looking for a 335 style outlet/rear end. I notice they only offer dual tips on one side or quad tips. Not my style, I would go with the single side if anything.

Would they sell the quad tip muffler section with single outlet tips that mate up to a 335 msport diffuser? Would buying the 335 muffler be the way to go? I am looking for the mid pipe too for sound.

Yes you can buy the muffler only and fabricated your own connection to use with other tips (1 on each side)

This is what you would be getting, the rest is on you

It might be easier to just get a 335/435 exhaust which comes with dual tip

I've heard many exhausts at various BMW events. My favorite is the AWE. You don't need the midpipe. Guys often go back to their stock midpipe, saying the the AWE midpipe makes it too loud for their neighbors or their wife. 😀

+2 for AWE.

I've seen multiple YouTube videos on the Milltek and it sounds great. Why hasn't it caught on? I came from the VW/Audi world and Milltek is popular over there.

Borla is always a contender, somehow they make every engine sound good with their muffler technology. How do they do it??!!

Any special on this or the AWE 335 muffler?

I purchased and installed the Remus 335i exhaust (dual exhaust w/exhaust valve functionality) for my 2016 328ix Wagon (n20). It was on the quieter side still during idle and mild acceleration, but sounded great when opened up. I've also compared their Remus 328 muffler to their 335i one, and their 335i muffler is smaller / more compact; thus creating a 'louder' sounding exhaust but with the same great Remus 'deep' sound.

I've since installed a catted ER downpipe to the car, and it sounds friggen amazing. Next step is to install the AWE midpipe I just got.

Here's some links to videos of my setup that I just took. I'll be adding the AWE midpipe sometime this weekend hopefully.

2016 BMW 328ix (n20) F31 Wagon, M-Sport. Most of video taken in sport mode.

Car has:
Remus 335i axle-back exhaust with stock midpipe
Catted ER downpipe
AFE dry air filter in a self-modified air intake filter box
Turner Motorsports upper intake pipe
MST turbo inlet
GFB diverter valve
ER throttle body to intercooler chargepipe
ER intercooler to turbo chargepipe
Wagner Competition Evo 2 intercooler
BM3 Stage 2 (aggressive) tune

Hey all, I thought I'd weigh in. I have an AWE midpipe matched to a Dinan axleback and I love it. It's got a great sound and is not obnoxious. I haven't seen or heard about anyone else with this combination.
I have an N26, so the AWE midpipe's elimination of the second cat really helped power in the 4500+ rev range.

I highly recommend this setup.

Interesting. Thanks for your input.

Curious why you elected to change the midpipe before downpipe?

Hey no prob.

To be honest, I think cost was a big factor. Virginia is an emissions testing state, so I can't go catless. The catted downpipes I am leaning towards (Evolution Racewerks) is around $950, I think. I got a good deal on the AWE midpipe during Black Friday last year, and picked it up new for about 30% off. Virginia doesn't recognize SULEV status, so I was free to remove the second cat in the midpipe (which is un-monitored anyway).

In about 2 weeks, I am getting Dinan springs, the Dinan ride quality and handling kit, a Megan Racing front strut bar, cross-drilled rotors, Hawk HPS 5.0 brake pads, and StopTech stainless steel brake lines installed. My plan is to get a new intercooler and hard pipes this year on Black Friday, then next year sometime I'll get a catted downpipe and upgrade from the Dinantronics sport tuner to Bootmod3 software.

I really wish we had options for an intake manifold upgrade.
