328i catalytic converter failure - White substance clogging P0420, P0430

So, I finally got some time, pulled out both my catalytic converters for my 2008 328i in preparation to replace them both.

I inspected them and noticed they are clogged up with some white rock buildup, i've read online this looks sort of like silicone poisoning. Anyone have any idea how this could have happened and how i can prevent this from happening to my new cats?

I've added a picture of how the cat looks on the inside taken with an inspection camera, so please excuse the image quality.

Is the cat substrate still intact? Or it's now gone left with these white substance?
If the substrate's still intact, check the structure for any cracks or blockage. Run a bore-scope if you can.
