Hi guys need some advise here.
It has been a bit cold here in Australia recently (it's Winter now) and we're probably getting down to around 1-2C overnight this past week. Until recently (this cold weather) I have not come across this issue where I get this sort of clunking and similar to a gear grinding noise as I pulled out of my driveway. Due to the layout of my garage I had to do a full lock turn as I pull out of driveway and I only get this noise initially as I am pulling out while steering is in full lock. I've tested warming the car up for a few mins before driving off and it's still the same, it sounds similar to like if you're driving off fast when a little gravel stuck under your tyres but I suspect it is either the diff or the shaft grinding noise. However once the car gets going and the whole thing warms up I don't get that noise anymore, until the following morning. It's the same regardless if I'm reversing or going forward, and only happening now when it's super cold and when I'm driving off with steering in full lock position. I just want to know if this is normal because of the weather and is it an acceptable behaviour or is it something I need to get it checked out? Car is an M40i 2018. |

This may be completely off the point, but worth a try to rule it out?
Could be moisture overnight on brake discs? Which could possibly explain the warm / time based fix. Perhaps try lightly keeping left foot on the big pedal whilst turning to see if it accentuates the problem. Or eve, if you know FOR SURE it does it for like first 5 mins, then really give the brakes a working/cleanup by driving with foot on brake. Then see if the problem is apparent. Just my 2 cents. |

I have exactly the same issue. Noticed this since swap to the summer tires last month. Not only the first start in the morning, if I park the car and pull out of the parking space with a full/semi-full lock turn at very low speed, it occurs. Going to ask the dealer to have a look during the scheduled maintenance in July.

This sound like the crabbing / skipping I get in cold weather. I had a thread on this. It's a combination of the Akermann steering geometry and possibly the LSD (if you have one). When the tyres are cold they don't give enough so they skip/jump.

I get this too with my summer tires only when driving slowly with full locked steering. It's tire slip probably from the steering geometrie. Doesn't happen with the winter tires as the tread is softer.

Many cars have this issue. Nothing wrong with your car.

Yep we only use non-winter tyres here in Aus and it definitely feels like the wheels are slipping a bit
