Fitted tweeters, now have excessive wind noise

FROM THE CAR, NOT THE BUM

Fitted a pair of Logic 7 tweeters to my 330d - bog standard system plus THA555 amp - very easy job, and makes a big difference to the sound.

But now when I go over 60mph there is much more wind noise, from both sides. I've checked the seals and they look fine.

Only thing I can think of is the original moulding had a block of foam in it, whereas the new one doesn't.

Anyone any more ideas?

You should have a block of foam that is a separate part number, when you order the mirror covers with the grilles... If you have no foam, that's why you're getting the wind noise...

I really want to do this mod, the whole amp and tweeters initially... just not sure I want to pull the car.

MOB: whenever you sell, please PM me :-) I love the look and current features of your car, and knowing your car history.

I would recommend doing the tweeters first - it really is a 15 minute job, and BMW's seem pretty robust and easy to pull apart and put back together!!

The amp is fairly straightforward as well - I found cramming the wires back behind the head unit the only tough bit

I don't intend to sell at the moment, but I've said that kind of thing before.........

The tweeters make such a big difference on their own - not too surprising. Whoever heard a good hifi with no tweeters? It's unbelievable that BMW can sell a £30k car without them!

Btw, to the OP, I didn't have any wind noise increase with the same mod. Can only think that they're not fitted quite right at one end.

Went to BMW lunch time - there are indeed foam inserts for the triangular sections with tweeters - £6 each or so.

The only downside I have found is that there is now good treble, but very little bass - even with the THA555 amp and the bass set to max

Luckily a pair of SWS-8 subs powered by the THA555 should fix that - there is a VERY good deal on US ebay at the moment - search under SWS-8 and see what I mean!

I hadn't noticed any more wind noise, but I hope the rubber will make it quiter for you though.

Remember the stock subs are fed off the front channels and you need to adjust the bass on the radio and not on the amp unless you have run seperate cables from the subs to the THA555 (but you probably know that).

I think the SWS8 subs run with seperate cables will make a big difference, and then you can control things better as well

You just cut out the foam you have already when putting the tweeters in.

Can I be a dumb ass here and ask what you needed to do to add the tweeters?

A little "how to" with pictures would be handy for this type of thing.

I'll try to do it when I'll put in mine (probably next week) can't wait

I still can't belive that you can buy a 40k car these days without tweeters. Embarrassing

By the way when I called BMW to order the parts they said It can't be done... I know it's not the first time they've done it but just wanted to express my disappointment

Basically;

Parts;
- 2 x BMW tweeters (I used Logic 7)
- 2 x Triangle sections with speaker grille section
- 2 x foam inserts

Tools;
- torqs (star shape) sockets - cant remember which size
- Recommend you buy something like this - its a godsend for prising stuff apart in any car - http://www.ipdusa.com/Universal-Prod...p-202-620-197/
- upside down bucket etc to rest the door card on

Process;
- remove the long aluminium/wood trim from door
- undo 4 retaining screws (plus one extra in the passenger door handle)
- Prise off door card - start at the bottom and work round
- Pull whole door card up and towards you - quite a bit of force required
- Rest door card on bucket!
- Remove triangle section - just play with it and it will pull off
- Put tweeter and foam in new triangle section - refit to car
- Plug tweeter cable into existing door speaker - test before refitting trim
- Refit everything

It is literally 5 minutes per door - BMW trims just seem to slot straight back into place without any drama

If anyone wants any help doing it, I'm based Northampton way and would be happy to do it for you!!

Thanks Mob, I think I will start my sound improvements with the Logic 7 tweeters.

I don't know how much the logic7 tweeters cost vs. the normal (hifi is it?) tweeters, but I'd guess without the rest of the logic7 kit you'll struggle to notice the benefit. If its twice the price (cost me £95 for the 'normal' parts) then it may be worth considering.

Excellent write up

I take it you can do the tweeters without an additional amp install ?

The simplest and most effective upgrade to the basic system IMO

Right. so now is official. If i've done it anyone can do it
I took me ~30 mins / door but I was really really careful.

Next the amp. I'm thinking 275 as I don't want the SWS 8... want to keep it as stealth as possible so don't want the separate cables.

Now the question - i know MOB said he wants more BASS anybody else had the same feeling?

Exclamation

I am quite shocked at how bad the stock audio system sounds.

But, thanks to knowledge gained from this site it seems possible to put right this situation.

However, BMW should hang your heads in shame at the poor system you provide!
