Tinting options
Hey everyone,
Just wondering what you guys have done in terms of tint and if you have any photos? I was looking to keep the rears stock from factory and matching the driver and passenger front windows around 35% to match the backs a bit more. I was told that with the windshield and pano it will bring more light in and wont look as dark. I live in Illinois and "legal" for the x3 is no lower than 50% on the front with the stock rears. Should i tint at 50% on top of the factory fromt which will bring jt a bit lower than 50% and on the border or should I just go out and bite the bullet and do 35%? any thoughts or input would be awesome! Consider a VERY light ceramic tint film, one that allows say 80%+ VLT (visible light transmission) over the rear factory privacy glass- that will give you heat rejection capability; the factory privacy glass really only reduces visible light, it rejects next to zero heat. You can match fronts to that, good shop will do and will yield uniform overall tint density appearance across all windows. Fronts may be slightly lighter due to light entering thru windshield but it won't be significant alteration in overall uniformity.
Agree on around 35%, if you go much darker on tint night driving vision gets iffy, borderline too dark to comfortably see. I have had 50%, it's pretty light.... pics: 2012 F25 X3, prior owner tinted all windows, they measure just under 20% VLT, too dark at night, I'm getting the tint removed and redone. Pic's can be deceiving as direction of light, time of day varies - appearance varies. A good tint shop will have a tint density meter and they can match film density front/rear quite closely. I believe mine is around 40%, I honestly cannot remember right now. Went with ceramic for UV and IR reflection (I live in central TX, it makes a huge difference in comfort). I also did my sunroof since BMW decided cost savings was more important than a quality cover. I have no issues with dark gauges or issues with night driving, I also didn't apply anything to my windshield.

Also live in Chicago, went with 35% on front driver and passenger windows, 35% on the roof, 70% on the rear. Still can tell there's a difference between the front and back, but much better than before. Front is illegal, but I care more about minimizing the heat and UV damage on the interior. Plus I feel that cops have much more important things to care about right now...
