Power Down Sounds?

I am sure this has been addressed before, but what is that electronic humming sound when we turn off our cars?

I'm not worried about it (pretty sure it's normal), but just curious what the car is doing when making that sound.

I too would like to know. I thought maybe it was the headlight motors doing some power down cycle? That’s purely a guess based on nothing though.

Never noticed any humming, only the fans/coolers working for a few minutes after shutdown (assuming I ended the drive in S or S+, which is usual)

Yep I hear it too after turning off the car. Sounds like it's coming towards the front of the car. My guess would be the headlights.

are you talking about the electronic noises from inside the center media console when the car fully shuts down after a few minutes?

That was my guess since I drive in S+ almost 90% of the time. But the only thing I know for sure sound-wise that's connected to powering down S+ noise is that I hear the valve in the exhaust closing, which is super cool, lol.

I thought so too.....but other than the DRL's, I don't usually have my headlights on.

To be honest I'm not sure where it's coming from specifically. All I know is it's towards the front of the car.

As for the center media console location.......what sounds are coming from there?

The first time I heard it, i was sitting in my car waiting for a ferry boat and I thought it was the ferry boat horn as it approached the dock. I was very confused when I opened my door and realized the sound was coming from inside not outside.

For those of you that have never heard it, turn off the car after a long drive and then sit in it for a good 5-10 minutes. You will hear it, but it doesn't happen for at least a few minutes.

Anyone heard this sound who does NOT have the executive package? If so that would invalidate my headlight theory, since those headlights don't swivel.

Is the sound when your center console turns off for idling too long?

All BMWs make weird sounds when turned off. Looked some of them up at one point, but forgot what each sound was for.

Here's a fun game to do during the pandemic, because you literally have all the time in the world. Open the hood after turning off the car and wait a minute or two, you'll hear clunking, buzzing, humming and they will be loud with the hood up.

That is common on all BMWs. If you are sitting in the car with it off, at some point (10 min?) the media/electronics/bluetooth etc all shut down and you get the sounds.

I have also heard the precision sounding humming sounds from inside the car, about 8-10 minutes after shutting the car down and sitting in the car with the doors closed in a quiet environment... my garage.

It makes a lot of interesting sounds, but you have to be patient!

Watch this. I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but if it is has a good explanation. It's the auxiliary cooling fans that are cooling down your turbos after engine shut down, as the cooling pump is mechanical on the turbo/engine side.

The "humming" sound is the gas pump either priming or retreating built-up gas pressure, after shutoff..

It should be even louder on the M2C, since it has two fuel pumps.

It is the electric water pump for turbocharger cooling.

S55 has 3 electric water pumps and one mechanical.

Separate electric pumps for turbo cooling, charge cooler cooling and passenger compartment heating.

Mechanical pump for primary engine cooling.

...Yes S55 has two fuel pumps but they are mechanical and driven by the engine itself turning over. Small electric pickup pump the tank as usual...

It sounds like an HVAC sound. Possibly the fresh air vents closing to seal up the car? It only last for a few seconds after about ten minutes of being off...
