Does the e90 contact BMW electronically when condition-based service is needed?

I'm just wondering if I can expect a call from my local BMW dealership saying:

"Hello, your e90 is reporting to us that it needs an oil change ..."

I see in the iDrive menu that there is a service notification area where the car apparently will transmit data without my request or knowledge.

If it really works this way (that the local dealership contacts me based on my car transmitting data to BMW) then I'd be super impressed - it's like BMW is out there taking care of me. And I don't mean the type of calls that most other dealers make based upon estimated mileage, I mean actual condition-based notifications.

I think that's only for the higher end cars

maybe it's a nav thing, but the 3's without nav certainly do not contact the dealer at all (mine's going in for it's 1st scheduled service on weds)

Not sure what you mean by ,, higher end" cars (there are many 3ers that sell for more than a 5er for example) but this is a standard feature in the 3er's telematics unit.

And no, it's not a nav thing and 3ers without nav do contact the dealer for service.

yeah, I just could have sworn on the ad I saw a little disclaimer about how it wasn't for the 3 (there's that tv spot with the guy in the 5 when the dealer calls into the car and schedules service with him)

I do have assist, now I'm curious as to if others are being contacted by their cars as service becomes due??? I don't really mind calling in to schedule it myself though

The car doesn't contact the owner, it contacts the dealer by sending an SMS message. I know you can manually send information - I will be delving into this in the next month or so for an upcoming article, so I what I learn about this, I will post here.

Pretty soon it'd be...

"Hello, this is your BMW service advisor. Your E90 has told us that it's been redlined 134 times in the last week, and to tell you it doesn't like you anymore...oh, and we'll be voiding your warranty"

or...

"Hello, this is the police. Your BMW has reported to us that you exceeded the speed limit by 38km/h...expect your infraction notice in your mail soon"

I know you are joking, but BMW has worked very hard to ensure the privacy of owner information as well as its security. In fact, what held up SVR was developing a secure enough (512 bit) system.

Funny thing is, I could see GM via OnStar doing what you described way before BMW.

Are you saying that Telematics uses 512 bit encryption when sending the SMS with the car's service data? (Not sure what you meant by SVR.)

If that's true, nice job BMW!

No, encrypted SMS doesn´t exist.

SVR is stolen vehicle recovery.

When we took delivery of our 330i (ZPP, ZSP, ZCP, Comfort Access, No iDrive)we had to give explicit contact info that our CA double checked with us. It was communicated to us that is was for service notification/scheduling/use/service.

Isn't the entire BMW service interval indicator that has grown in sophistication with the E90 meant to let the driver know of maintenance requirements first?

I can check the status of so many functions with my iDrive, it is great. I always see when my oil change is due and I can call up when I need to check the brakes status for instance anytime.

I then call my dealer and schedule the car in when it suits me.

That is what I have done with my previous BMWs. Very easy.

One of the reasons that I don't want bmw assist. I have no interest in the car talking to my bmw dealer or anyone else about my service.
And because BMW doesn't plan or want to tell government where my car is and what i'm doing with it doesn't mean that the government won't require them to, after all since I wrote this post I must be a bad guy.

This is the link to the commercial....I think. I cant see it unless I waste money.

I'm pretty sure this was the commercial with the guy singing "Wheels on the bus" when his phone rings and a service rep says its time to perform service. The video was shot in an E90.
