B48 vs B46 engine?

What is the difference between the B48 and B46 engine? My 330i has the b46 engine so I don't know whether things like jb4 or bm3 would be compatible with my car.

Just some slight tuning difference for emissions from what I’ve read. JB4 and BM3 are all compatible. But BMW has some software on the newer cars that apparently prevents flashing via OBD2.

B46 is the B48 engine but with SULEV parts, indeed for emissions regulations.

Sorry I'm not familiar with this, what is SULEV?

Newer cars as in 2020 models or 2019 (my manufacturing year)?

2020 models have also been manufactured in 2019 (my car is a MY2020 manufactured in 08/2019). By newer cars, I meant cars that were manufactured after a certain month in 2019 (I can’t remember which month exactly but I’m guessing 04/19 or 06/19). If your car was manufactured before that and hasn’t been in for a service or anything, it should probably have the older software which enable flashing via the obd port. But again, don’t take my word for it. This is what I found out after doing some digging and reading online and info from 3-4 others on here and another forum. I’m not saying what I said is 100% correct. Just passing along whatever little info I know.

My car was manufactured 04/2019 so hopefully the OBD2 port works.

There’s a very high chance it might not.. Rumours have it that it is cars after March 2019.. I have 2018 production date for my vehicle, that’s why BM3 worked.

You’re probably right. The guy from India I’m in touch with said his car has software from 03/2019. That’s why he has no issues. Same with the other two people I know. One is late 2018 and the other is very early 2019.

I wouldn’t be worried, they’ll be cracking it real soon, the guys over at PTF are really good at what they do, I think X3M and X4M just have priority right now over B48 support since they want to prep it for the incoming G80 M3/M4s. But I’m pretty sure after that they will definitely be working rapidly to crack the updated DME in G20.

How do I find out if my engine is b46 or b48?
I have a 2021 330i x drive with M sport pack.

I would like to know if the MST air intake for b48 will also work for b46.. if my engine is b46.

I heard US cars are all b46

You can still do a bench unlock even if you have the new austere suite

You'll need to find a local shop to do it for you (they physically remove the ecu from the car and unlock it with specialized hardware that the shop has) or if you don't have a local shop you can remove the ecu yourself and mail it to a shop who can do it (or road trip =D)

Main difference between the 2 is regarding emission
Most US cars are B46, the rest of the world is B48

Most FBO parts fit both engines with the exception of the downpipes, some intake, and upgraded turbo

Both can be unlocked by bootmod3, the main factor regarding compatibility is the ECU firmware version not the engine
