45e - electric only in reserve smoke??

Hi Guys

2nd post about my car. I've noticed that when my car is in reserve and electric only mode, I can see smoke coming from one side of the car. Anyone else noticed this??

I'll try and get a video of this when it happens next time. As when it does happen its smells like rubber in the cabin.

This is absolutely not normal and I would get your car checked out at the earliest possible moment.

I would not even drive it with smoke. Smoke is never normal. Don't park inside and get it to the dealer - that would be my 2 cents.

Are you sure you haven't touched the gas pedal when in neutral and started the ICE? Smoke might come from only one side due to exhaust flaps. It can be hard to tell looking at the dashboard that the ICE is running. Just a thought.. But it shouldn't smell like rubber though.... Get it checked!

If you slide the gear lever left (perhaps this is the oposite direction in the UK, especially since brexit) the box is in sport and this also forces the ICE to run.

Other than that, weird, definitely see your dealer.

Exclamation Burnt rubber smell. And smoke

I’m on a road trip across the western US and I put my X5 45e in Battery Control mode. This charges the battery while you drive. I drove about 5 miles after dinner this way and when I stopped I could smell burnt rubber and smoke coming from underneath , centered, about where the transmission most likely is located. Anyone have this issue diagnosed by BMW?

Another reason we should have stayed in.

I heard all 2025 models will swap the position of the brake pedal with the accelerator. That and we will get our curved bananas back. Yay Brexit.

Just a thought: I once drove over a dry cleaning bag in the road and it wedged itself into the exhaust system and melted itself in place. Smelled like holy hell and was impossible to pull all of it out. Basically had to wait until it burned off.

Exclamation Second time - burned rubber smell

I’m certain it was the vehicle and not foreign matter. This is the second time I have smelled this burning rubber smell. Both times I have had the battery down to 0% and then putting it into Battery Control mode.

Does the 45e have a particulate filter similar to diesel cars? Maybe the car was regenerating the filter (it smelled like burned rubber on my 530d)?

No...if it was heat related and smelled like electrical components, it could be serious. If it was say oil, there could be a leak and that could be as well. If the 'smoke' was white, it could be steam or coolant. You'd have to be there to evaluate, but in any case, is not normal and should be investigated.
