Does anyone know when or whether X5 will get a built-in dash cam as a paid option?

I just leaned that you can order an OEM bmw advanced car eye system. Dunno how that should be installed (assuming thru dealer?)

Why can't bmw just have that as a paid option?

I'd just buy BMW Drive Recorder, which uses the car's in-built safety camera's as a dash cam. Front, both sides, and rear views, its awesome.

You can buy it in your Connected Drive (CD) store.

The recorder triggers if:
* the vehicle detects an accident or collision; or
* the driver initiates via iDrive or via the Camera button next to the gear lever by pressing 2-3 times quickly.

It's actually always recording, because when triggered, it records 10-20 seconds before the trigger point and 10-20 seconds after.

If you don't see it in the US, I assume you have a 2019? It's stupid that they can't figure out how to add it, since it seems that the hardware is there? Shame on me for not waiting. It sucks since this is kind of a useful feature, unlike the ambient lighting in the moon roof.

Ambient moon roof lighting saves lives!! lol

The first I saw of software/hardware weirdness was in 2006 when we bought a new Audi. The package we had did not include heated mirrors, but the shop I used at the time was able to activate the "option" with ticking a box with his laptop connected.

Don't know where you got your information, BUT it is available in the USA. I have it and it works just fine. I believe it is available on the 2020 X5, X7 and 7 series right now. Not sure about the 5 series, or others but as long as you have the executive package it's there.

Precision, precision ... In US, as of today, the situation appears to be:

- DR is NOT available as a subscription, but
- DR IS available as part of MY2020 Executive Package

The situation is different in other countries.

Mine is a January 2019 build date, and Driving Recorder works a treat.

I think this will be a great feature, means I don't have to install a dashcam. Picking my M50i up this weekend & will try it out.

It's not called offered in the context of the OP's question... we're talking about being a standalone option that you can buy as a software. It's offered on 7 series in US though. I believe cost is about $300 there. They could easily add it to the X5... there is literally nothing stopping them as they clearly are able to enable it over the air.

I wouldn't call anything available as an option if it's only part of the executive package. Go check the 7 series build page, it's literally a standalone option for $300...
