Wow these new figures are harsh/very real.

Out of interest I looked up my X3 M40D with the new figures.

37.2 - 39.2Mpg

As usual the lower figures would be with the bigger wheels etc.

After 19,000 I'm at an average mpg of 40.4!!!

Thus moving forwards with my journey types it looks like I can realistically expect to achieve and actually better WLTP.

I checked the WLTP figures for my 520i, there are lots of different figures to choose from

The combined figure of 39.2mpg is pretty much what I get, in fact 42.2 is what the idrive reports although I'd guess the idrive will probably be a bit more optimistic than the real figure

So it seems WLTP figures are at least representative

Are you doing quite a lot of motorway or a road cruising miles? I've done 8,000 miles so far, with a fair amount of motorway cruising mixed in with Peak District blasting and mine is a disappointing, to me, 37.4. Same profile and driving I hit 35.6 long term in the 440i.

What do you expect? You are effectively driving a one and a half tonne brick? Not exactly the most aero vehicle is it...
The only thing that is amazing is that the 40i was so frugal (for a petrol).

Garage List
2018 BMW M3 CP  [10.00]
I just did 355 miles in my M3CP and used 50.7l so 31.8mpg. That was mainly M-way at a cruise speed I won't put in print, but also driving in and out of Manchester and in and out of Newcastle including 45 mins of stop start. WLTP for combined is 30.4 so a much better guide than the elusive 34mpg - normally my average is around 27 - still good for wide tyres and 450hp that begs to be used...

Yes fair play, new WLTP is 'believable' and that was the point of the thread I guess. I used to get similar from my M4 but a little less from the M3 CP. think I enjoyed the MPE too much!

The real fun of WLTP is tax changes from April not fuel consumption

I have a 530d arriving in May
First road tax goes from £210 to 530
Over a 4y PCP Im pretty OK with this

Spec your 540i wrong and its £700 quid extra - not a deal breaker in a 55k *cough* car

There are probably worse adjustments.....

Cheers

I was aiming my question and comparing it to someone else with an identical car, who also does a lot of motorway miles. Thanks for your input though.

I had a X3 2.0d on loan when I had my 330d in for service and saw the difference first hand the aerodynamics make.
330d averaged 45mg on my usual work run, while the X3 averaged just 38mpg. With the 3.0 I can only imagine this would be a little worse still...

I doubt it, because a 20L will be working much harder to pull the X3 where as the 30L will pull it very ease.

Only if the 2.0d is under powered for the speed driven. BSFC should be in a better place with the 2.0d working a bit harder... engine will be more efficient.

Average speed is probably involved here. An extra 5mph will make quite an impact on mpg with the X3 'brick' shape.

I have found the WLTP figures on the M40D to be quite accurate tbh. I have just come back from a return trip to Cambridge from Newcastle, first long drive in the M40D.
This including several days local traffic in Cambridge. The car did the trip on a single tank, consuming 60.25lt over 545 miles so an average of 41mpg. Considering the strong winds, rain and traffic i think 41mpg is very good indeed for a 3.0l twin turbo 2 ton SUV. Eco Pro 90% of the time, 72mph true cruise when possible and a total of 52miles coasting (really helps to extend a few more mpg).

The WLTP for the M40D are:

WLTP Consumption (Combined - Mixture)
37.2 − 39.2 mpg

Consumption (low - City Driving)
31 − 32.1 mpg

Consumption (medium - Town Driving)
37.2 − 39.2 mpg

Consumption (high - Rural Driving)
40.9 − 44.1 mpg

Consumption (very high - Motorway)
36.7 − 39.2 mpg
