Key Slot Questions

Hey Everyone. I just replaced my 06 325i with a 06 330i (I got hit and the other party totaled my 325i) and I noticed that the key doesn't stay in the slot. The key has stayed in the slot so far, but I can pull it straight out with the engine running.

I have seen the replacement part and I have seen Pelican Part's fix. But my worry is that I am going to pull my dash apart and install the new key slot, only to have to have it coded to the car. I have seen the forums, but no one has mentioned whether they had to have it coded to the car or not.

No coding is needed. Just remove the cover and there are 2 screws on the left hand side. Then use a screwdriver to pry the silver tabs out of the way on the right side. The unit then slides out.

And by doing this, I can use the original key that came with the car, right?

Try this:

Pull remote out while sitting in driveway and drop on floor.

Shut off engine with stop/start button.

If it stops, what is the problem?

Also, do the same while driving slowly.

Dash will flash a yellow key with a slash through it and chime at you while driving with no key. I'm not sure if it's a one time chime but it's annoying.

I've had my key pop out going uphill on a not so smooth 1-2 shift, kind of scary if you're not expecting it.

There is a lock that disengages when you push in again, sometimes if you just pull out without re-engaging the lock it won't reset itself.

Yes the original key works fine. The key into is programmed into several different modules in your car. The key slot is not one of those modules. It simply reads your key for the rest of your cars systems.
