I'm considering an M340i
So I'm trying to decide on what to get for a daily driver/date night. I like the M340i xDrive and X4 M40i. I have not test driven either, but based of reviews and as well as performance they really seem to be the best in class.
I wish to purchase new or very slightly used, I have read a lot about leasing as that seems to be the way most people go. Countless people have said don't drive these out of warranty on any of the brands I have looked at. The M340i is right at a budget I'm comfortable with is just under $70k Canadian Taxes and everything in. Is that a good deal? How is the reliability of BMW? Any real issues with the M340i for commonly breaking down? How does it perform in winter weather with of course proper snow tires on? What tires should I switch to for both summer and winter? Any advice to someone who has loyally bought NA cars till they decided to move to Mexico? |

Get Michelin PS4's for summer tires, that's what most of us run. I use blizzaks for my winter set up and will continue to do so.
I have a 2015 335i with 48,xxx miles that's been out of warranty for 5-6 months while I wait on my M340i to get here. I've had zero issues w the car and I think most will tell you quality is overall pretty high on most models. After all, this is a BMW forum

I think the primary reason people suggest to not own BMW out of warranty is not so much the frequency of problems, but more so the cost associated with repairs should a problem occur. It's much more costly to fix a BMW than say, a lexus/acura/infiniti. I don't personally have any first hand experience with this, but it's what I've heard. I've decided to lease because it made more financial sense to me.
As for the M340i specifically, it's much too new to know if it will have any major issues. Your last sentence confuses me. Are you saying you're no longer loyal to NA cars because they've shifted production to Mexico? Or that you've moved to Mexico? I'm assuming the former... and in that case, BMW has shifted some of their production to Mexico already and has plans for additional production in Mexico in the future.

Your last sentence negated your entire post. MX is not a problem for car production. We live in a global economy.
You have a ton of niggles about this. If you can't easily afford a $70k+ car, the M340i is not for you. It's a new model, so no long history of reliability. It seems you need to test drive.

If you are leasing it, then the reliability isn't an issue. You will be getting rid of it before any major issues come up (36 months) and you will be under warranty if anything does come up.

That being said, what would you suggest is better at $70K? I ask because my M340i had an MSRP of about $69K.

Because he can? Because he wants to?
Because almost no other car in like-competition beats it?

I have tried to find comparable cars in that class. There's nothing else unless you want to go to something like a Kia Stinger which is downgrade in luxury and performance. Doing an S4 or C43 at more cost and less performance doesn't seem smart to me.
Yes, being in Canada, cars cost more in ticket price but our dollar is also less so it evens out kind of. It's also the cheapest new car that I'm considering. In order to get more performance and more luxury there is a huge cost to that. |

70 K CAD is 56K USD - which is sadly a great value for a middle class car now days.
and even at 70k USD i challenge you to find the car with all the features of the M340: modern technology - remote start - laser lights - full autonomous driving Aka traffic jam assist with 3 Kafas cameras - full connected drive features, remote view etc - self park and self back up assist - future platform update and features via OTA updates Plus the performance - under 4 sec to 60 mph - amazing cornering and balance on track - rear biased 4 wheel drive - Limited slip dif - Brembo brakes - Available upgraded cooling - comfortable seating for 5 - sizable trunk - decent fuel economy |

- self park and backup is ill - executed here. Tesla is the baseline. - OTA updates are not working the way they should be. Car your citing costs 65-70K with features that are not applicable to all / fully functional. The M340 is a great car, but its worth 60K, your welcome for saving everyone 10K. Go put that towards a real estate investment. |

Good Deal depends on the options you want and what you are willing to sacrifice within your budget. I would use carcostcanada and unhaggle.com to get idea to compare slightly used m340 vs brand new to order. I have the G20 330 M-sport with Excellence Package, so far no major issues as this is also my first BMW. The engine for m340i is the B58, which is carry over from F30 Model Year 2016-2018, but factory tuned and boosted to 382HP, 369 Lb-ft. We Canadians only get Xdrive with M340i and 330i, it does perform well, occasional sliding in real heavy snow, but best traction with winter tires. Other than that drives like rails. Link here for discussion about winter tire combinations: https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1669804 https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1660228 Depending on how the m340 was ordered from the factory, you can select different wheel options. By default as per carcostcanada/unhaggle, I believe the m340i summer tires come with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. I recommend to check the ordering code(s). https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1584217 Can't comment on quality of build as my G20 M-sport was assembled in the Germany. |

Your response to the follow up question for where that "better value elsewhere" might be is the equivalent of telling someone to go buy a Toyota Corolla and invest the $50k in real estate instead.
Asset value isn't exactly the reason someone looks to purchase a BMW, or any luxury car for that matter. Which is why anyone asking you where that better value for $70k that you claimed might be is doing so expecting suggestion of another car for similar pricing that might be better than a loaded M340.
