Get your 6 pot fix now!

Because in 15 years time you wont be able to...
https://news.sky.com/story/pm-drafts...r-ban-11925821

I cant see it myself and would mean a massive charge point infrastructure build.

Hopefully might push bmw for some good Q2 m340i discounts though

Well that gives them enough time to get electric cars sorted, hopefully by then you'll get them to do 500 miles between charges and sound like a V8

15 years is not long enough to sort out electric charging or the supply chain for charging. Anyone live in a flat here? Anyone have to park on-street at home? The lost income from tax on petrol and road fund will have to be found elsewhere. Will they tax electric, then those who don't have cars will pay more for theres? What about those who now will not be able to own cars, more investment into public services and transport. This government have a great track record in that!!

Typical throwaway comment by a politician that hasn't thought things through. A bit like when Cammeron said we would have 3million apprentices. Well we are only 2.2 million short of that figure 6 years on. He also said any crazy thing once letting people decide if we want to be in the EU.

Anyway the future is hydrogen. Infrastructure is already there (Current Gas one) but still doesn't solve the problem for Mr smith who lives in a third floor flat and has on street parking.

You'd take them seriously but for the fact that they are HM Government and couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery, remember it's taken them 10 years and £10 billion not to lay a single piece of track on that flagship project that is HS2.

Best keep the M5 then - in 20 years it might be a collectors item....

All very valid points above - of course the key one being that Boris knows he wont be PM then so not his problem....

When they say no petrol or diesel they actually mean no single source petrol or diesel so hybrids are ok, can you see what the fudge will be to say we have achieved it....? Models like the latest S6 will be reclassified as hybrids and allowed...

Nope - hybrids now excluded as well in a change to the policy

Garage List
Imagine a world in which...
  • All petrol/diesel cars had just 15 litre fuel tanks.
  • 75% of current fuel stations didn't exist.
  • Fuel pumps were regulated to deliver only one litre per hour.
  • You could only pay for fuel with a special fuel card which was not accepted at all outlets.
  • The nozzles on fuel pumps were assorted shapes, many of which didn't fit your car.
  • At least 10% of fuel pumps were out of order.

If only the governemt had implemented these measures decades ago, we'd all be ready to switch to EVs right now!

I like the idea of EVs and it will happen, but there will be a lot of pain geting there.

This. It has approximately zero meaning.

^^This

It's the "goal" of the govt to be a world leader in tackling climate change, says Johnson as he launches UK Year of Climate Action ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference later in the year, to be hosted in.... wait for it.... the UK.

I very much doubt the 2035 date will be achieved but it sounds good and ticks the right boxes, which is all Johnson, and the vast majority of politicians, care about.

Reassuring news in that article for those that need to cross the highlands in inclement weather:

The Scottish government does not have the power to ban new petrol and diesel cars but has already pledged to "phase out the need" for them by 2032 with measures such as an expansion of the charging network for electric cars.

Imagine hitting the last charging site before Rannoch Moor in a blizzard and finding you've not subscribed to the right provider!

Just got to hope by that time there is a totally 100% clean & a substantial infrastructure to provide that much of an electricity demand. Would be a typical British government to say look all are cars are electric but we burn x amount of fossils to charge them up.

Our government couldn't even manage to get Smart Meters sorted, what chance have they got of making a success of the EV charging infrastructure?

Zero, just look at the shit show that is the charging infrastructure as it stands, everyone going off in different directions, no central policy, thinking up "solutions" to issues that don't exist, apps and other such nonsense, different pricing, different charge rates, different connectors it's a farce.

I'm all for it but they need to stop with the piecemeal announcements and actually produce a credible plan or the country will grind to a halt.

Look how long it took the government to get brexit sorted.
And how many times have the last two prime ministers said “we WILL be leaving the EU on xyz date” over the last 2 years.

Promises and no delivery.

Andrea Leadsom is in charge of the policy we're all discussing here as Sec of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

Enough said.

Yeah, think it makes me the idiot! Spent a few minutes earlier checking which of my pension and ISA funds have Tesla and was pleased to find some!

I think they plan on driving the economy of Scotland so far into the ground that no one can live there anymore, hence there will be no need for vehicles

This is exactly the problem. Governments these days are too focused on banning things and not focussed enough on delivering the enablers to their policies. Given the utter disaster smart meters have been EV infrastructure is guaranteed to be a disaster too. I guess some one is going to have to unwind all of this in 15 years time.

It's going to take a while to flush through (let's just say they do it and provide the correct infrastructure) if we take the numbers of ICE/Hybrid cars by 2035 to be the same as today (for the sake of argument) at 30 million with retail sales of 2 million (again for the sake of argument) it'll take 15 years to clear on a one for one swap out basis, so by 2050 it'll all be done but I'll be 80 (if I get there) so I won't be bothered...

I think the above is a pretty simplistic best case (impossibly so) scenario.
