Reverse parking assistant in empty lot?

Intrigued by the reverse parking assistant. Demonstrated by dealer and is really cool! I'm informed that it will sense at least one of the parked cars already there. Which is fine. However, does it work when the car park is empty? Will it pick up on the parking lines that are already there?

Why? The point, I suppose, of the reverse parking assistant is to get one out of a tight spot that one drove into by going back the same way. Why would one need/want to do that in an empty lot?
